If the Pakistan-brokered ceasefire had not occurred over two weeks ago then, by now, Iran and all the Gulf states would have experienced catastrophic damage to their energy, communications, and water infrastructure, effectively turning the region’s demographic and economic clocks back to 1950. This would have plunged the world into an economic depression comparable to 1929 and likely triggered a wider regional war or even global war. The worst has been averted for now. A better path forward is being constructed. 🇹🇷, 🇪🇬, 🇸🇦, 🇶🇦, 🇴🇲, 🇨🇳, are supporting 🇵🇰 in trying to bring an end to the war. This is an incredibly difficult challenge, but if any nation can meet it its Pakistan.

Over the last few days, I have spoken several times with my Pakistani counterpart, @MIshaqDar50, to discuss the evolving situation in the Middle East. He shared that new negotiations will take place later this week. I thanked him for Pakistan’s continued efforts, including its role in helping secure the current two-week ceasefire, and reiterated that Canada stands ready to support these talks. We agreed on the need for the ceasefire to hold and extend to Lebanon, and to remain in close contact as discussions move forward.

Moreover, India does not occupy such a high moral ground as to mock others. It maintains ties with Israel, who commeted genocide, engages with the Taliban, and has distanced itself from its longstanding partner, Iran—especially when Tehran needed support the most.

عام پاکستانیوں کی جیبوں پر کھلا ڈاکہ ہے کیونکہ حکومت نے ابھی تک مہنگی عالمی قیمتوں پر ایک لیٹر تیل بھی نہیں خریدا گیا مگر آج سے ہی شہباز شریف حکومت نے ایک ہی جھٹکے میں پیٹرول اور ہائی اسپیڈ ڈیزل کی قیمتوں میں تقریباً 20 فیصد اضافہ کر کے عوام پر فیول بم گرا دیا ہے۔ پیٹرول 321 روپے فی لیٹر اور ہائی اسپیڈ ڈیزل 336 روپے فی لیٹر کر دیا گیا ہے۔ اس کا صاف مطلب ہے کہ حکومت اپنے موجودہ ذخائر پر اضافی قیمت وصول کر کے فوری منافع اور ٹیکس اکٹھا کر رہی ہے۔ پیٹرولیم لیوی بڑھا کر ریونیو کی کمی پوری کرنے کی کوشش کی جا رہی ہے حیران کن بات یہ ہے کہ حکومت خود کہہ رہی ہے کہ ملک میں 25 دن کا تیل ذخیرہ موجود ہے۔ یہ سب ایسے وقت میں ہو رہا ہے جب پاکستان کی 45 فیصد آبادی غربت کی لکیر سے نیچے اور 23 فیصد لوگ بے روزگار ہیں۔سوال یہ ہے: کیا ریاست کا مالی بوجھ پورا کرنے کا واحد راستہ عوام کی جیب پر ایک اور وار ہے

Shameful scorecard: During 2018-2024, political instability/Regime Change with 6 PMs in 6 years resulted in shockingly high poverty rate of 29%, highest in 10 years, with 70 million Pakistanis now living in abject poverty, with 26 million kids out of school with 44% stunting among under-5 children, while Punjab Govt has callous temerity to squander Rs 11 billion on a luxury business jet which can directly fly nonstop from Lahore-London! And then they have cheek to talk of ‘austerity’ & ‘good governance’ while people of Pakistan are worse off than before!

According to a report commissioned by the Planning division, poverty in Pakistan has increased from 21.9% to 28.2% from 2018/19 to 2024/25. Poverty has increased both in rural and urban areas and in every province. Also the Gini coefficient has increased for all provinces. Gini measures inequality and the higher this number, the higher is the inequality. In the last 6 years, Pakistan has become more unequal and more poor. We need to change structure of our governance.
