As someone born in 1980 - so too young to see ANY of the films in their original theatrical run - this was as much my introduction to STAR WARS as anything else. It's how STAR WARS culture became omnipresent for kids like me during that era.

📺The ‘Muppet Babies’ use Nanny’s camcorder to film their own version of #StarWars featuring Kermit as Luke Skyhopper, Piggy as Princess Piggy and Animal as Animal Vader

This is right — that ending is a rare (probably unique) display of negative capability from M. Gibson, and it raises an otherwise excellent film to a level of art that seems lost on those seeking political/moral messages of whatever kind.
Michael Brendan Dougherty@michaelbd

Apocalypto is a masterpiece and every reaction the ending inspires in you is valid and intended. It’s both judgement of human sacrifice, and a statement that the protagonist’s struggle for his life and land is moving to a higher more desperate and futile level.

For Marylanders it was particularly effective at the time. My buddies and I saw it and then drove out to Burkittsville, MD *THAT NIGHT*. We got chased out of a local graveyard by a night watchman, who yelled at us about "that damn movie."
Foster@foster_type

There is simply no way to recreate watching this in the theaters when it came out. I was a tween and the guerrilla marketing campaign was ridiculously effective. With the internet in its infancy my friends and I were still about 57 percent sure that this was a documentary.

@foster_type I saw this in the theater and was so bored. Only the last 90 seconds or so is compelling.

I think if one is trying to figure out if a candidate is sympathetic to Nazis, one of the most important tests is whether the candidate knowingly got a death’s head tattoo signifying an elite, brutal group of SS officers and kept it until the second he wanted to run for Senate and someone noticed. It’s an insult to everyone’s intelligence to suggest otherwise. Sorry, his Medicare thoughts from last week are not permanent body art or absolution.
Jon Favreau@jonfavs

As the community note makes clear, I didn't delete it because I stand by it. But if MAGA world has decided their best play is to insult Mainers' intelligence by trying to fool them into thinking Platner's old tattoo makes him a Nazi sympathizer, best of luck in November!

@EsotericCD The old Crossroads 2 box set made an implicit case that he was still capable of making compelling music for another decade, it just wasn't apparent on any of his official albums

I got to experience May Day in Chicago exactly the way nobody wants to: forced upon me at close range. A personal tale, for @NRO:
