@EsotericCD @Political_Beats Nice! Can’t wait. Official meaning studio albums, or also live compilations like Europe 72 and Reckoning? I can wait to find out, just curious.

Jeff Blehar is *BOX OFFICE POISON*
@Political_Beats (keep in mind, all I do in my spare time is listen to random Dead shows, and I have quite literally *heard every single one* btw 1966-1978, and tons afterwards as well. So this is a hard one for me to tackle.)

I think I'm finally ready to discuss the Grateful Dead on @Political_Beats. Just their "official album discography." I think I finally have formulated an approach that will do them justice.

@EsotericCD Frost has turns of phrases that have entered the American idiom without crediting him, like folklore. So he gets my vote.

@EsotericCD I love The Band version of this song — I never knew it was a Stevie Wonder song. Thank you!

What film were you surprised to learn was from that particular director? For example, I was surprised to hear Irvin Kershner did Robocop 2 in addition to The Empire Strikes Back. Also, that Wolfgang Petersen did Enemy Mine, in addition to Das Boot.

@Gibboanxious I also think the way the film was structured with about four timelines/plots blended together made it impossible to cast younger actors. And yeah, this doesn’t look good but what do you want? Less DeNiro? Less Pesci? Not me.

As much as I love The Irishman, this scene should have stayed on the cutting room floor.

@divalectics And Peter Cushing from the Hammer studio movies was the other big star.

the cast of STAR WARS is so funny by 1977 standards. it is just not the group of actors a studio would’ve chosen to on-purpose make the film so seismically significant that will change everything: the director’s friend, a nepo baby, guy from a soap commercial, and alec guiness

@JoyceCarolOates Which version/publication do you read for the Journal? I switch back and forth between Damion Searles’s version and Odell Shepard.

also spent hours on a trans-continental flight reading Henry David Thoreau's Journal in loving detail confident that probably no one anywhere even in an alternative universe was reading the words I was reading at that time. "if a dog comes after you, whistle for him." "there is no remedy for love but to love more." "each man's world is but a clearing in the forest."

I've taken to a very niche occupation: reading sections of novels that no one reads, taking time with background passages that professors who are familiar with classics routinely skip over. all the descriptions at the start of "Madame Bovary"--amazing whale minutiae in "Moby Dick"--most tedious passages in "Ulysses" (Irish politicians, old feuds)--almost hallucinatorily precise descriptions of landscape in Paul Bowles. knowing that NO ONE ELSE is reading these passages is a weird sort of pleasure. it is good to do useless things often.

Paul McCartney says fans deserve to hear the songs they paid for, which is why he's never fully embraced Bob Dylan's approach to rearranging classics or playing obscure tracks live. "I've been to see a couple of shows of Bob's, and I couldn't tell what song he was doing. Now that's a bit much, because I know his stuff. I get it if he doesn't want to do 'Mr. Tambourine Man.' Maybe he’s fed up with that, but I would like to hear it. And I've paid." consequence.net/2026/05/paul-m…

The 1990s had not been particularly kind to Bob Dylan. He began the decade with Under the Red Sky, a star-studded record with some strong songs that might be best remembered for “Wiggle Wiggle,” a nursery rhyme from hell.

@EsotericCD I keep going back to ‘71 too. You’re right, it’s Pigpen in his glory. A recommendation: 3/18/71 at the Fox in St Louis. A very emotional Wharf Rat and the only Caution from 1971.

Man, there's just something agelessly agreeable about the Grateful Dead in 1971. Not pushing out too far, just keeping it square in the zone.

I'm enjoying one of my favorite albums, Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, but once again, I'm skipping over "Within You." Are there any albums you adore, despite disliking one particular song???
