Senior year of high school, I joined a local debate club. I was fascinated and excited... until the first class when I found out that all debates had the unconditional goal of "winning." I had no idea that virtuous people found such a goal to be acceptable. Nothing to do with truth. I sat in horror and later cried myself to sleep that night because I was so stressed about spending the next year arguing for things simply because they were the opposite of my opponent. Im glad I did it and I learned some things, but to this day the concept eludes me.
