7 September 1896 Arsenal 3 Rushden Town 2.  The first ever United League match for Woolwich Arsenal.  The club entered its first team into the 8 team league with the matches arranged to bring some income in addition to that of Football League games.

@TimAdamsWrites @kevinmitchell50 Great stuff. I worked on the Northants Evening Telegraph pink 'un 1964-68. I reckon we ran a halftime edition as well as at fulltime. I covered Rushden Town & was bylined the Russian. If we won the pink 'un carried a cartoon block of a grinning Cossack; drew/lost he was scowling!
