Anybody who’s followed @Vol_Hoops for the past 50 years gets it, the scope of what Rick Barnes has done with a program that has produced great players and great moments, but never this kind of elite consistency. Yes, there’s still the white whale, the Final Four. But there was a time when the mere idea of three straight Elite 8’s on Rocky Top would have been like saying the university was going to order the band to never play the song again.

People trying to turn this into Erin being ungrateful are purposely missing the point. I covered college football + basketball for 6 years, missed Christmas and Thanksgiving religiously between bowl games, holiday tournaments, etc. When I was briefly a sideline reporter, same thing. As well as when I was first getting TV reps at ESPN. I volunteered to work every holiday. Hell, me and my momma spent Thanksgiving in Bristol because I was filling in on First Take. Erin was speaking to realities of the business and I didn’t take it as her asking anyone to feel bad for her. A lot of younger reporters say they want to do what she does, but are you willing to do what she did? No, she isn’t digging ditches, but the negativity these comments created was unwarranted.

We want to take a moment to celebrate our very own Chelsi Davis. Two months ago, she was notified that she was a bone marrow match for a patient in the United States fighting Acute Myeloid Leukemia. Chelsi has been on the NMDP (formerly Be The Match) registry since 2017, when she signed up in memory of her grandmother, who passed away from leukemia in her 40s. Her grandmother wasn’t able to find a matching donor, so when Chelsi learned she could help someone else, she didn’t hesitate for a second. Last week, she flew to Houston, where she donated stem cells from her blood over the course of two straight days. Those stem cells were immediately shipped to the patient’s hospital, where they’re now providing life-giving support in that patient’s fight against cancer. Chelsi didn’t do any of this for praise or attention. In fact, the only reason she’s allowing us to share her story is the hope that it might encourage someone else to join the registry.
