Chelsea introduced ball boys in 1905 to support their giant goalkeeper William "Fatty" Foulke. Standing over 6 ft and weighing around 22 stone, Foulke moved slowly and tired quickly. Young boys were stationed behind the goal and around the pitch to quickly return balls, saving his energy and helping him stay in position.
