"Coaching isn’t about providing solutions—it’s about creating environments where players find their own." The Constraints-Led Approach (CLA) helps athletes learn by interacting with carefully designed task, environmental, and individual constraints. Here’s how constraints shape skill development. ⬇️ In the CLA, a "constraint" isn't necessarily a barrier or obstacle, even though that's what the term might usually imply. Instead, constraints are factors that shape or influence movement or behaviour, guiding athletes toward discovering solutions This idea of ‘constraints’ come from Newell’s Model, where constraints are grouped into three main categories: - Task constraints: Rules, goals, or tools used in the activity. - Environmental constraints: External factors like weather, space, or playing surface. - Individual constraints: Characteristics unique to the athlete, such as their physical capabilities, motivation, or experience level. This graphic, from from Otte and colleagues (linked below), shows the ‘constraints triangle’, illustrating how these factors interact. Importantly, no constraint works in isolation—when we manipulate one, others are still at play. This is why effective coaching isn’t just about changing one variable but understanding how multiple constraints interact.

Football tends to be made up of small sided games all over the pitch. Do we spend enough time putting players into situations relevant to the position they will play in the game? Would it be more beneficial for players to break it down into it's component parts? @SundayShare10
