It also makes the point that there is existing regulatory divergence between GB & NI gov.uk/government/pub…

There was legitimate cause to use the brake. Not annoying Brussels in the slightest clearly matters more than sparing the DUP a complete nightmare.

The EU could involve Belgian king to extend sanctions against Russia if Hungary vetoes, says FT The EU may turn to King Philippe of Belgium to prevent €190 billion in Russian assets held in the Belgian depository Euroclear from being returned to Russia if Hungary vetoes the sanctions renewal, the Financial Times reports. Without the sanctions, these funds could "return to Russia the very next day." One proposed measure is invoking a 1944 military decree, granting the Belgian king the authority to block the transfer of assets from the country.
