What’s it like inside the National Weather Service right now? My colleagues @evanbush and @ChaseCainNBC got a rare look inside one local office. They found dedicated people committed to the mission but an office that is unquestionably understaffed. nbcnews.com/science/scienc…

There hasn’t been a worse time to be a coral in recent history. In April, NOAA declared the world’s fourth mass bleaching event - one that continues today and is growing. (1/)

10 years ago today, I was working a weekend shift @seattletimes when word came in of a landslide near a small town named Oso. It turned out to be the deadliest landslide in U.S. history. It also became an exhibit for why local journalism matters in a time of crisis. 1/

@The7Rob The report says research from this year suggests that the world could be committing to 12-20 meters of sea level rise if global temperatures remain at 2 degrees C. That melt process will take hundreds or thousands of years to complete. Rate of melt remains a big question.

@evanbush …”the planet could be committed to more than 40 feet of sea-level rise — a melt that would take centuries and reshape societies across the globe.” Are you saying it could take centuries for the sea level to rise 40 feet? Please clarify. Thanks

NEW After Lahaina barely averted catastrophe from wildfires in 2018, Maui residents raised concerns about lack of warning sirens, clogged evacuation routes, power-line risks & other issues. But officials didn’t learn the lessons, some now say nbcnews.com/news/us-news/m… w/ @evanbush

Personal news: I had originally planned to keep this under wraps a while longer, but word is starting to leak out, and now a job opening for Seattle Times sports columnist has been posted, leading to a lot of (valid) questions. So here it is: I’ll be retiring in November. (more)

Terrible news. Craig's writing is sharp and immersive. And I won't forget how accessible and kind he was when I was in my early 20s and bumbling around the Seattle Times. What a loss for Nat Geo.
Craig Welch@CraigAWelch

My new National Geographic just arrived, which includes my latest feature—my 16th, and my last as a senior writer. NatGeo is laying off all of its staff writers. I’ve been so lucky. I got to work w/incredible journalists and tell important, global stories. It’s been an honor.
