The Dec. 2024 core update is rolling out, and we expect it will complete in two weeks. If you're wondering why there's a core update this month after one last month, we have different core systems we're always improving. This past blog post explains more: developers.google.com/search/blog/20…

There's a lot to unpack based on the event. First, a new search ranking update is coming soon. But that won't take any of the publisher feedback into account obviously (it's too soon). So a big heads-up that an algo update will be rolling out soon. I'm assuming a broad core update, but could be something else. Stay tuned. Beyond that, there were some wild quotes being shared by publishers that attended about when they could expect to see recovery (or not), if their content was the problem with the HCUX, and more. I'm still going through those tweets and blog posts, but I wanted to point that out...

Google told creators yesterday at the GooglePlex that a Google search ranking update is coming fairly soon but they should not expect to recover, they should move on seroundtable.com/google-search-… via @charlestoncraft and @mountainweekly

Really engaging and interesting conference as always #Ness2024. It so interesting to get different opinions from different types of publishers. Don't optimise for Discover, Do optimise for Discover, Don't open access to AI bots, Do open access to AI bots. There's always nuance

Today we released the August 2024 core update. It continues our work to improve the quality of our search results by showing more content that people find genuinely useful and less content that feels like it was made just to perform well on Search. developers.google.com/search/blog/20…

@timothydclark Just watched the black and chrome edition of fury road and it was as good as I remembered. Hope I get a chance to see furiosa before it leaves the theatres

Managed to catch a Furiosa screening before it left theatres altogether. Do try and see it on the big screen. It’s a ripper.

We’ve launched a new “Web” filter that shows only text-based links, just like you might filter to show other types of results, such as images or videos. The filter appears on the top of the results page alongside other filters or as part of the “More” option, rolling out today and tomorrow globally….

@searchliaison @lilyraynyc You’ve missed Lily’s point. Real discussions on results for e.g. travel advice or specific DIY guidance can be great. YMYL, and specifically, medical advice that’s unvetted and potentially dangerous not so much.

That unit appears automatically if the systems think it might be relevant and useful. I's not like someone said "put it first for that particular query" -- which I know you understand, but others reading this might not. That said, I can appreciate the concern and issue, and I've passed that along to the ranking team to see how we might improve the automated systems here. Related, I also know some of the SEO folks who tend to be vocal on this platform really dislike seeing more forum content in our search results. But actual searchers seem to like it. They proactively seek it out. It makes sense for us to be showing it to keep the search results relevant and satisfying for everyone. We explained more about the value last year here: blog.google/products/searc… As with any change to our ranking systems, nothing is perfect. There will be issues that come up, as I talked about in the past: x.com/searchliaison/… So our goal will be to keep improving things forward, and constructive feedback like this is appreciated.

Serious question for you @searchliaison: For 6+ years, and throughout the QRG, Google has shared that YMYL queries - presumably like "weight loss" - require the highest levels of E-E-A-T. For 6+ years, we've seen sites like the CDC and Harvard ranking prominently for these queries, plus Google's own "symptom search" knowledge panel, which was also supposedly curated using information from the Mayo Clinic and Harvard. Why, then, is it ok for Google to add a "Discussions and Forums" carousel above all of these E-E-A-T-driven medical results when we are seeing very clearly how Reddit is being overtaken by affiliate spam and scammers? This is not the only such YMYL query where Discussions and Forums ranks so prominently. Isn't this a big dangerous for Google?

@couldstrafe That’s interesting. I wonder if search volumes are low, but it seems an opportunity for review sites and publishers to make some affiliate 💰

@EvanKypreos I tried to google best black friday deals here in Portugal. And despite the fact that there are black fridays sales, nobody seems to cover them.

Good luck to all writers and editors working hard this #BlackFriday to highlight good deals for people. First year I'm not covering it in a decade. Remember, not everything is a deal just because there's a big % reduction. That's often total BS.

Noticed a big drop in core web vitals URLs across dozens of disparate domains I have access to. This isn’t good drops and poor goes up. They have just reduced by up to 50%. Has anyone else noticed this or knows why it’s happening? @rustybrick this is just one example

@searchliaison @lilyraynyc In the meantime while there are clear perpetrators why not a manual spam penalty? I’ve been seeing this site doing this for weeks and weeks. Seen sites get manual penalties for a lot less than this horror show…

@lilyraynyc We're aware of the concern. Sometimes we take some time exploring issues to ensure we have a good, scalable solution.
