Why does the myth of the Luddites as out-of-touch & anti-technology endure? @bcmerchant tells me why & makes the case for contemporary Luddite resistance @GlobeIdeas. Strongly recommend “Blood in the Machine: The Origins of the Rebellion Against Big Tech” bostonglobe.com/2023/09/25/opi…

AI doesn’t care and can’t be empathetic. At the same time, because the medical system is broken, far too many doctors come across as robotic. Given this dilemma, Dr. Thomas Carroll critically consider three ways AI might be used. statnews.com/2024/08/15/can…

Being philosophically inclined, I’m curious about why throwback places have such a spellbinding aura. I think it’s because they are analog outliers stubbornly refusing to follow the imperatives of efficiency, convenience, and profit, writes Evan Selinger. trib.al/NEcCLXR

Of all the things I’ve written, this one is my favorite! It’s a love letter to a unique old family-run hotel that serves amazing homemade soup and is a temple of the analog. Every time I go, it’s a spiritual pilgrimage! Bonus riff on Benjamin’s “aura.” bostonglobe.com/2024/04/05/opi…

What's the best piece of writing that defines and criticizes solutionism, the technological fix, and the like?I'm looking for something that is conceptually rigorous and clear, not loose pop criticism stuff. Like, I would almost like an analytical philosopher's take . . .

Brenda Leong and I discussed red-team work for generative AI systems on NPR. We talk about how uncomfortable the experience can be and how to improve training. #AIethics wbur.org/hereandnow/202…

@rcalo As you probably know, I was nervous what the day after leaving Microsoft would feel like. It’s been part of my identity for such a long time. This is incredible. Thank you so much for all the love and support!!

Enormous thank you to @sueglueck, whose last day at Microsoft was Friday. Sue has been an *incredible* champion of the interdisciplinary tech policy community. She’s launched so many of the places and people making the world better. #thanksue 💜

@voxbec @BrettFrischmann @chainsawdotcom @Google I was just talking about physicians working with generative AI to improve empathetic communication for electronic communication over patient portals. Are you addressing something more wide-reaching?

@EvanSelinger @BrettFrischmann @chainsawdotcom @Google Some cultures have much stronger taboos around mental health issues. And often men are less comfortable about these topics too. That is going to affect voice and facial changes. These are the tip of the iceberg of contextual nuance that must be considered.
