Also there is no clear motive. People claim it was testing Chinese resolve, but this would be a very strange way to do it since while bombing an embassy is a massive outrage it doesn't actually infringe on any of the Chinese state's essential objectives.

I actually do believe that the bombing was accidental, mainly because the US issued a public apology, which it never ever does for war conduct. However bombing the embassy of a nuclear state in a third country on accident really isn't much better than doing it intentionally.

I know many of you will not believe this, but I know for a fact--given my position at CIA at the time--that this was not/not an intentional act by the United States. We apologized for it and paid reparations to the families. It was a tragic moment in Sino-US relations.

@changnisia0 The US basically realized this in Korea. They probably could have pushed the PVA back if they massively pulled air assets from Europe but that would leave it exposed to the USSR and even then the Chinese troops would just re enter whenever they took the planes out.

@gonglei89 Without this China may have been stuck in an actual middle income trap scenario where wage levels are no longer internationally competitive but there also isn't any huge bulge of talent coming through the overstretched education system. This is the date of countries like SA.
