I think that if they actually gave a damn about disabled people, they would be fixing the systemic issues that cause people to suffer too. Poverty, loneliness, homelessness & inadequate healthcare are what is causing the rise in T2 deaths but nobody wants to address that….

Alberta's making it more difficult to seek Medical Assistance in Dying. Disability advocates are applauding the legislation, while critics say it's a blow to freedom and autonomy. What do you think? 👀 FULL: rtrj.info/031926MAiD 🎧 FULL: rtrj.info/031926 #MAiD

Interesting, Environment and Climate Change Canada’s (ECCC) has the same acronym as us - Every Canadian Counts Coalition (ECCC). Not too bad a company.

Under a newly proposed law, Alberta will enhance palliative care, protect conscience rights, and prevent euthanasia for patients whose deaths are not reasonably foreseeable--helping to shield people with disabilities and mental health conditions from the pressure to be euthanized. It's a good start: a real banner moment for this province, an opportunity to lead the country back to full recognition of human dignity. Credit to @mickeyamery and @DanWilliamsAB for taking the lead on this.

“…hope should always be easier to access than death.” Grateful for @GoA_Justice and @mickeyamery leading the way in 🇨🇦 with first of its kind provincial legislation to restrict #MAID and save lives. calgaryherald.com/opinion/column…

Canada took zero steps to respond to the CRPD committee. Alberta's legislation is entirely consistent with the conclusions drawn by the Committee reviewing Canada's shoddy performance under the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.

I hate that I have to say this but experience on here tells me I do: You are not swearing a loyalty oath to any party or politician by supporting this bill. Saying that it is a good bill does not mean you are saying that other bills or policies aren't bad.

Easily the most important example of Canadian soft power in the last decade has been the cautionary tale of our experiment with assisted suicide. Our slippery slope has helped deter the UK Parliament, and now Scotland, from moving forward.

In Canada, suicide legislation has led to a pitiless terrain where the sick and vulnerable are being pressed into decisions made by cost-conscious health bodies: last month’s column on the Assisted Dying bill heraldscotland.com/politics/holyr…

So very sorry for your loss. The systems that keep people in legislative poverty are criminal. We will keep fighting. #NDIP

@ODSPoor No family since my big brother passed. In the past 2 yrs Mom has lost 6 friends, the last one that passed really knocked the wind out of her. The same way living Disabled in Canada did, she was tired of the constant fight, she wanted peace of mind, peace in general

Five years ago, on March 17th 2021, the federal government granted people with disabilities who are not dying of natural causes special (discriminatory) access to assisted suicide through Track 2 MAiD (medical assistance in dying). At the time, our CEO, Krista Carr was widely quoted as saying “this is our worst nightmare.” It still is. If March 17th raises difficult feelings for you, you’re not alone. Today, at Inclusion Canada, we’re continuing work on our Charter Challenge. We’re promoting the fact that Canada must repeal Track 2 MAiD to become compliant with the CRPD (Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities). And, we’re advising the government not to legalize MAiD for mental illness in 2027. Someday, may this be history.

🏆🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿BREAKING: VICTORY IN SCOTLAND! In a triumph for hope over despair, life over death & support over suicide, the Scottish Parliament has voted AGAINST assisted suicide. MSPs have settled the issue for a generation & dealt a mortal blow to assisted suicide in Westminster.🧵1/

With you. Disability = poverty= isolation =family breakdown= homelessness = increased mental illness = MAID. The reason we fight for a national disability insurance program #NDIP Support from birth to end of life based on need.
Amanda Achtman@AmandaAchtman

Today Scotland rejected assisted suicide in a major win for life and hope! Meanwhile, Canada is set to expand euthanasia to those whose sole condition is a mental illness exactly one year from today. Let's change course. Support Bill C-218 to scrap the MAID expansion.

So painful when you know there is a way to fix this. #NDIP @PattyHajdu @lesliechurch @karinagould All levels of government shirk their responsibilities. Please support a National Disability Insurance Program.
LosinghopeinCanada@losinghopein

The deliberate underfunding of disability supports across Canada is why disabled people are being coerced into MAiD. Provinces and the federal government with their #CDB lies have killed people 🤬💔 We need a dignified income and real efforts at accessibility. Stop killing us.
