Successful settlement of pink sea fan larvae for Kaila Wheatley Kornblum with @AquariumCurator and the team at the Horniman Museum aquarium: three perfect early stage fans - just a single polyp each at this stage - first time we have observed this in this temperate coral species.

Working with Jamie Craggs and his team at the Horniman Museum in London, Kaila W K (Exeter) has successfully managed to observe the pink sea fan, Eunicella verrucosa, spawning; the first time that this has been reported in a temperate soft coral.

Such a cool study by @KirstyLMacleod and the @ExeterEvo team, showing that rare dispersers drive gene flow & IBD, and prevent significant genetic drift & differentiation, in otherwise disconnected marine populations. Well done all for the immense hard work underpinning this! 🌊🪸

@BD_Stew p.s. in addition, we characterised maerl using whole genome sequencing from this bed in our 2021 paper (doi.org/10.1111/eva.13…). The picture needs to be credited to Mark Milburn.

@BD_Stew Hummh, this is not a 'find'. The existence and extent of this bed has long been known to locals, authorities and researchers. It is/was one of the key reasons why the proposed dredging of Falmouth harbour has been so controversial over the years (as previously covered by BBC)!
