Ok, friends, I think the time has come for me to step down from this account and hand it over to a suitable guardian. My explorations of controversial topics here have been fun, but as someone very wise recently said to me: "Contrarians should win eventually, there's no point being contrarian so you can die as a beautiful loser" Winning means having focus and that means limiting Tweeter to a select set of topics. If you would like to take over Roko__Eth please DM me just stating your name and @, and I'll pick a new caretaker at my own discretion. No pressure to do this, and no guarantees who I pick or why. So long and thanks for all the fish!

What is the downside to being super conscientious? like why isn’t 90th percentile levels of conscientiousness the median? There must be a cost or trade off here that prevented this from developing. But i can’t think of what it could be.

Similarly, we're getting a new wave of UFO hype. What changed recently that might make UFO incidents happen? I suspect that the intense competition between the US and China for missile and space supremacy is the ultimate cause of the "UFO"s.

Was the world visited by UFOs in the late 1940s and early 1950s? No. But something real to do with objects in the sky did happen in that period: steveblank.com/2010/01/28/bal…

ICESTEADS Interesting idea from @RokoMijic - instead of traditional seasteading approaches, capture an iceberg, insulate it, and build on top. It can then be sailed to where you want over a few years and anchored to the sea bottom. Should last 1,000s years and cost $20M/km2.

There is something truly tragic about how many of us slavs truly bought into western classical liberalism & libertarianism post cold-war and some of us autistically tried to build projects and companies in that spirit only to get rewarded with … prison cell.

Btc-e, Sci-Hub, Hydra, Tornado Cash, now Telegram. All my life we keep building anarchist havens – and Westoids keep wrecking them to Enforce their Rules Based Order (really, mostly censorship of crimes against themselves). I hate it. (Signal sucks btw. I won't use it.)

> "Cold weather -> more dependent on group -> manifests as more social anxiety, fear of exclusion -> conformity" Extreme conformity made Hajnal Europeans very powerful, but also very susceptible to subversion. @Roko__eth Mmm, yeah. Cold weather -> more dependent on group -> manifests as more social anxiety, fear of exclusion -> conformity. (the "Social Anxiety, Fear of Exclusion, and Individualism" section from this paper: journals.sagepub.com/doi/full/10.24…) Or is there more to it than that?

@lefineder Side note: why do peoples always seem to travel from east to west through the Eurasian Steppe and never in the other direction? Is there some geographically determined reason for this?

Singer's claim that it shouldn't matter whether a drowning child lives next door versus 8000 miles away in some random third world country removes a key safety feature: localized altruism converges to cooperation, unlimited altruism doesn't.
