A few months ago, Chancellor Scholz asked President Zelensky whether a call to Putin would be appropriate. Zelensky opposed the idea, and Scholz refrained. However, after the US elections, Scholz decided the time had come and made the call. Zelensky publicly but gently criticized him for it. What’s the result? 1. The call doesn’t seem to mean anything significant to improve Scholz’s image among German voters sympathetic to Russia. 2. Putin broke out of European isolation, and Germany paved the way. Right after Hungary. 3. Trust between Zelensky and Scholz has been strained. Keep in mind, Germany is Ukraine’s second-largest provider of military assistance after the US. 4. Germany’s hard-won reputation among Ukrainians has taken a significant hit. 5. Putin showcased to the world that his strategy is working - the West will eventually bow its head under the cover of urging him to stop the war which he is not going to do. I may not be privy to all the arguments in favor of the call, but I struggle to see how it was justified. In English, they call it a “false start.” What’s the equivalent term in German?
