Disgusted to see that @wessexwater have blocked access for swallows to get to their nesting site at Tonedale water treatment works. The pair have bred there for at least the last 3 years.

@barrabirder Very nice indeed Bruce failed to see one this winter in Somerset and Red-throats were low in numbers, for what reasons I’m not sure 🤔

15 summer plumaged Black-throated Divers still lingering off Vatersay today and very nice they looked too! Also the Surf Scoter still in Vatersay Bay, Velvet Scoter still in the Sound of Barra and a few more flocks of Whooper Swans passing over.

Great to see Wheatears back again, Minehead, Somerset, no doubt en route to their breeding grounds. Sadly, a very scarce breeding species in Somerset now with the only recent records on Exmoor.

Common Crossbills have been performing well in Norfolk this year, since they started arriving in July, but this lovely male, at Dersingham Bog today, surely has to take top billing!

Red Kite, Exmoor yesterday. An increasing visitor here. The number of records went from 95 in 2023 to 310 in 2024 including an astonishing 159 seen in one day on May 20th by Andy Pym. Numbers in Somerset as a whole increased by an incredible 47 per cent in the same period.
