In my continuing doomed attempt to promote more 1980s Dutch pop music on X, may I present Frizzle Sizzle and their 1986 hit Alles Heeft Een Ritme! Frizzle Sizzle was a Dutch teen group whose members started out in the Kinderen voor Kinderen choir, before becoming pop stars. Their biggest single, Alles Heeft Een Ritme, represented the Netherlands at the 1986 Eurovision Song Contest (it came a respectable 13th) and also reached No 21 in the Dutch charts. In 1990 they also teamed up with Jack van Gelder to release Alles Is Oranje for the World Cup.

Just to get it straight. Donald Trump has: - threatened Canada (a NATO member) with invasion - threatened to occupy Greenland (part of Denmark, a NATO member) - announced several times that he wants to leave NATO - refused to support Ukraine, even though the United States gave security assurances to Ukraine in the Budapester Memorandum of 1994 - actively finances Putin‘s war against Ukraine by easing sanctions against Russia - denied that soldiers from European countries have ever supported the United States and thereby - spitting on the legacy of fallen European soldiers who supported U.S. operations - imposed witless tariffs on its allies - insulted the leaders of allied countries over the past months And now he wonders why not everyone comes running when he calls. The situation in the Strait of Hormuz is a mess for the whole world. But Donald Trump himself is responsible for this geopolitical chaos.

@JagersbergKnut @rohanpaul_ai Arguably the 20 years were needed both for hardware to catch up and also for amassing "Internet scale data". Even if you had a transform architecture in 2000 you couldn't do very much with it.

@rohanpaul_ai besides Schmidhubers claim to have invented transformers in the 90s, it took like 20 years from LSTM to transformer. We've had 10 years since the transformer. Arguably hybrids are already taking over, but that's not a leap forward but efficiency win.

Sam Altman just said in his new interview, that a new AI architecture is coming that will be a massive upgrade, just like Transformers were over Long Short-Term Memory. And also now the current class of frontier models are powerful enough to have the brainpower needed to help us research these ideas. His advice is to use the current AI to help you find that next giant step forward. --- From 'TreeHacks' YT Channel (link in comment)
Rohan Paul@rohanpaul_ai

Morgan Stanley predicts a massive AI breakthrough driven by a huge spike in computing power across major U.S. laboratories. Increasing the amount of hardware used for training by 10x can effectively double the intelligence of these models. The recently released GPT-5.4 Thinking model already matches human experts on professional tasks with a score of 83% on the GDPVal benchmark. The biggest hurdle for this growth is an energy crisis, with the U.S. power grid facing a shortfall of 18 gigawatts by December-28. To keep running, developers are bypassing the grid by taking over Bitcoin mining sites and using natural gas turbines for their AI factories. This shift is creating a solid investment cycle where 15-year leases on data centers generate high financial yields for every watt consumed. Large companies are already reducing their staff numbers because these new AI tools can perform professional work for a tiny fraction of the cost. Researchers expect AI to begin recursive self-improvement by June-27, meaning the software will autonomously upgrade its own code without human help. The future economy will likely treat raw intelligence as a commodity that is manufactured by these massive computing and energy clusters.

@SalvMattera Technically TV is around 90 years old but admittedly pre WW2 market penetration was miniscule in the few countries that had it 👴

TV is 70 years old. The iPhone is 20 years old. Video games are 50 years old. Screen time is up only modestly in the last 10 years. I'm almost 37 and when I was a kid, I didn't have a cellphone, but me and my friends spent hours a day watching TV and playing on our PCs. This is such an obviously silly scapegoat

code and math will fall, and soon, everything. right now we’re powering these models with the equivalent of windmills and steam engines. the infrastructure being built, stargate, colossus, the gigawatt campuses is the industrial revolution of intelligence. and we’re not even close to done. dyson spheres for compute are coming.

@brownecfm Such a high lethality - especially if it has a linear age dependence - is a major evolutionary disadvantage for a pathogen as it can drive genuine and lasting behaviour change. The worst case scenario would be probably be a slightly more fine-runed scov2

I took part in several simulations regarding exactly this long before SARS-CoV-2 emerged. Dr. Chan is correct: under the circumstances she describes here, a pathogen with a CFR of 10%, a high R0, and unmitigated transmission is perfectly capable of causing societal collapse.
Alina Chan@Ayjchan

I estimate 10-20% lethality with majority infected needing hospitalization is sufficient to end civilization as we know it. This point doesn't seem to be appreciated by those who believe accidental lab leaks aren't capable of being catastrophic.

@justaneighsayer Thankfully OG SARS sucked b**z as a pandemic virus: It had high mortality across the board, so even the Young And Healthy™ were genuinely afraid of it AND (apparently) produced far less pauci-symptomatic cases. All you needed to screen for it was an infrared camera.

Remember back in the day when we COLLECTIVELY defeated the original SARS? Yep, we didn’t have to live with forever C19. Yet most ppl couldn’t give up indoor dining and took terrible advice from minimizing grifters like Neil and that furry avatar Chise claiming the vax was enough

When you receive training from a former FBI hostage negotiator on how to communicate and how people’s brains actually work, every reaction online begins to make sense. People are programmable, the same way computers are programmable. You have to make an effort to understand their programming before you try to change their mind or condescend to make a point. Few people are willing to do this, because all they care about are likes and ratios.

@slow_developer I am using it with codex to edit a LaTeX manuscript, and while its writing is a definite step up compared to 5.2, it still makes typical 'LLM mistakes', correcting one aspect of the text while 'forgetting' others despite explicit instructions to that effect.

gpt-5.4 with xhigh is probably the SOTA model in many domains i don't think most people are doing work that really pushes modern models to their limits but when you're working on difficult coding problems, gpt-5.4 is noticeably better than 5.3 codex and opus 4.6 i'm also surprised by how deep and clear its thinking is
