Federal officials claimed ICE agents merely caused a “cut” when they shot 21-year-old Kaden Rummler with a so-called less-lethal round, and falsely portrayed him as violent. That claim has now completely collapsed. Kaden has officially lost his sight in his left eye. In the video, filmed in Santa Ana, protesters are gathered on a public right-of-way at the Civic Center Plaza, an area where they are legally allowed to assemble. ICE agents then grab a young man, prompting nearby protesters to move forward. Kaden steps forward. He is unarmed. He is not attacking anyone. An agent fires from only a few feet away, aiming directly at Kaden’s face… a use of force that violates federal use-of-force standards, which explicitly prohibit targeting the head with less-lethal munitions except in the most extreme circumstances. The blast embedded plastic, metal, and glass into his face. Kaden immediately collapses, curled over and bleeding on the ground. Instead of rendering medical aid, the agent then grabs him by the neck of his shirt, effectively choking him, and drags him toward a building while blood pours down his face… raising serious questions about excessive force, denial of medical care, and unlawful seizure. Kaden later underwent six hours of surgery. Leaving him blind in one eye. So let’s be clear: This wasn’t crowd control. This wasn’t self-defense. This wasn’t a “minor injury.” This was the reckless, unlawful use of force against an unarmed protester, followed by an official attempt to downplay the damage and smear the victim. If federal agents can blind an American for protesting in public, lie about it, and face no consequences, then the question isn’t whether this will happen again. The question is how many more people will be permanently harmed before the government is forced to obey the law it claims to enforce.
