Every year, the world's glaciers lose 266 billion tonnes of ice. This Saturday marks #WorldGlaciersDay — a reminder of what's at stake.
Understanding how glaciers and ice sheets move, thin, and lose mass is essential for projecting future sea level rise. @ESA's Climate Change Initiative Glaciers and Ice Sheets projects deliver the long-term satellite records to do just that.
Both Greenland and Antarctica are losing ice:
🌍 Glaciers worldwide: − 266 Gt/yr
🟢 Greenland ice sheet: − 166 Gt/yr, driven by rising air temperatures and surface melting
🔵 Antarctica ice sheet: − 111 Gt/yr, driven by ocean warming and increased glacier flow
