Session 15… Not bad for starting later than I wanted to. 1-2 weeks and I’ll add back strength training. Getting fit again with little kids is not easy, but if I can do it so can you. The world feels messed up. We all should try to be the best versions of ourselves.

I was sitting in the gym this morning thinking about all the reasons I didn’t want to be there. It was pretty empty, except for a handful of people I recognized as joining in the new year. I go at off hours, so it’s never busy and I always enjoy seeing new people get started. Sitting there on the turf, staring at a kettlebell and thinking about everything but getting started - I thought about I’m going to do for St Patrick’s Day. Then I thought about how I looked on St Patrick’s Day 15 or so years ago, at about 450 lbs and a walking cardiac event. I thought about why I accepted that for so long? What took me so long to get started? And I got pissed off and started my workout. Then the clarity hit me: It didn’t fucking matter why I didn’t start sooner. I eventually did. If you set a resolution, to lose weight, to start a business, or learn a new skill and you haven’t started… No one is going to look at you on New Year’s Eve and ask why you waited until January 24th. Get after it. Especially today. If you can do it on the coldest day of the year you can do it every fucking day and you owe that to yourself.

Plan to share my workout stats as a form of self-accountability and hopefully positive influence. Being a dad is awesome, but having kids - especially one who slept horribly for years - was not conducive to personal health. If a bum like me can get back into shape, you can too! Goals at this stage in life are a bit different than 15 years ago: 1) Improve general health 2) Prevent injury 3) Rebuild functional fitness (and some strength) 4) Challenge myself 5) Make sure I can beat my kids in sports for at least another 10 years 5) Increase mental sharpness 6) Reduce stress 7) If/when I lose my hair, pull off the aerodynamic look… 8) Remain a viable last round pick in the MLB draft. I particularly want to generate some positive vibes for all the younger (and/or future) parents out there who may be following me. Having kids is great, but - at least for me - the first few years were a massive disruption to my ability to maintain any sort of reliable fitness routine (or really routine of any kind). If you’re in that boat, don’t despair! You will eventually get your energy back. And if you can carve out the time and energy for personal health while your kids are little, you’re already FAR ahead of where I was.

Alright, time to get back at it. Our daughter slept like crap for 2 years and my energy went to 0… Got totally out of my routine. No excuses now. So long as there are professional athletes older than me, I still have hope.
