15-year-old Fatoumata*, fleeing forced marriage in Mali with her younger sister, was sold to traffickers in Libya after a brief stay in Tunisia. She was later rescued by @MSF teams aboard Geo Barents. 💔Her testimony is heartbreaking.

I often think the EU would be much stronger (and better) if the Member States didn’t have these panicky, self-harming, nationalist reflexes on migration. ➡️ ”Germany steps up controls at borders in response to irregular migration” theguardian.com/world/article/…

Aegean Boat Report
Aegean Boat Report@ABoatReport·
Over 100 small children forced into life rafts and abandoned at sea by the Greek coast guard in July. In July Aegean Boat Report has registered 47 pushback cases in the Aegean Sea involving 1.314 people. Of the 5.126 people picked up by the Turkish coast guard in July, 25.6% had been pushed back by Greek authorities. Of the 47 pushback cases we have registered in July, Greek authorities used life rafts as a tool for deportation in 23 of them, 645 people, men, women and children, were found drifting in a total of 35 life rafts. 48.9% of the pushback cases in July was performed by using life rafts as a tool for illegal deportations, the highest percentage registered. The number of people pushed back in July have increased 37.3% compared to June, and the highest number registered the last five months. All the 35 life rafts found were made by the same manufacturer, Lalizas, from Piraeus, Greece, the same manufacturer who has a contract to provide equipment to the Greek Hellenic Coast Guard. Since 2020 the Greek Coast guard has used 1.530 of these life rafts to illegally deport over 26.500 people. To force people into life rafts and leave them helplessly drifting at sea is illegal, but seems to be of no concern for European politicians, as long as the Greek authorities get the job done, stop as many people as they can, by any means possible to enter “Festung Europa”, they are more than willing to look the other way. European Parliament and Frontex is not only looking the other way, but also supporting and funding these illegal operations, all in the name of “border protection”, paid for by European taxpayers money. Perhaps for the same reason, there has been no investigation initiated by the European Parliament to investigate these life raft cases. Even when it was filmed by Fayad Mulla and published in The New York Times, there was no reaction, as if this isn’t happening. To visualize the 35 life rafts and the 645 people forced into them by Greek authorities, we publish pictures taken from all the cases in July. As an organization we publish a lot of statistics, but behind all these numbers there are real people, real human beings, just like you and me, all of equal value and importance. It’s easy to forget the people when we don’t see them, no faces, no eyes, just numbers, it’s as if they are not real, they don’t exist. Please look closely, and you will see that the people in these pictures are real, with hopes and dreams for the future, just like you and me, we are no different, we are the same. Don’t pretend they don’t exist by looking away, it’s time to open your eyes. Kudos to all of those who, on a daily basis, do their utmost to fend for the rights of people at our borders! More pictures of the life rafts in July can be found on our Facebook post.

Six Italian coastguards and police officers are accused by prosecutors of involuntary manslaughter. 🟣Charges come 18 months after victims perished when their overcrowded boat sank. 🟣Frontex had flagged the vessel to the Italians late in the evening as weather worsened.

Aegean Boat Report@ABoatReport·
It’s with a heavy heart that I’m now announcing that Aegean Boat Report is forced to drastically scale down on our operations, due to lack of funding. I have for months tried my utmost to find new financial partners, who see the necessity of our work, and are able and willing, to support our project documenting violence against men, women and children at our borders, unfortunately, so far, this has not been successful. Criminalization by Greek authorities of Aegean Boat Report, and it’s founder Tommy Olsen, has taken its toll. Potential financial partners finds it difficult to support someone, where there is arrest warrants issued, and we are told to return to them when “the legal issues have been resolved”. Anyone who has knowledge of the Greek legal system knows that this will take years to resolve. Aegean Boat Report will continue to monitor the ABR Hotline, our highest priority has always been to assist people asking for help first, everything else will be scaled down to a bare minimum. Eventually, if no substantial sustainable solution is found in the next two months, I will be forced to close down Aegean Boat Report. Yes we are followed by thousands of people, and many relies and use the information we provide in their daily work, especially journalists. But those who will suffer the most, when we close down, will be, and always is, the men, women and children, who on a daily basis rely on our assistance. What is importantly to understand, is that no organization can survive on likes, views and followers alone, it actually takes money. We will in the nearby future, publish more detailed information on the reasons why we are forced to close, if no sustainable solution is found, and the potential negative impact this will have on the current situation in the Aegean Sea, advocacy, and last but not least, for people on the move. I am very sorry to have to publish this, I have postponed this as long as I could, in hope of finding a solution, unfortunately there is at the moment no solution in sight. The bottom line is, if no financial solution is found, Aegean Boat Report, who has been fending for the rights of vulnerable people for seven years, will be closed within a few months. Aegean Boat Report@ABoatReport·
Over the last six weeks many people have contacting Aegean Boat Report for assistance, both new arrivals on Greek islands and people in distress at sea. We have tried our utmost to provide necessary support, so that people on land could be found and taken to a camp, and people in distress at sea could be rescued and taken to a port of safety. Due to massive increases in people contacting the organization, we have for some time been unable to publish daily reports on arrivals on the islands where we have been involved and provide assistance. This is of course unfortunate, for years we have strived to publish as much as possible to inform the public, but these last weeks has been challenging and made it impossible, for this we are truly sorry, but hope our followers will understand. We have tried to assist people arriving on islands across the Aegean Sea. In most of these case the groups have provided pictures, videos and geolocation data that confirmed without a doubt that they were on these Greek islands. On our side we have tried to provide the groups with necessary information, so that they themselves could contact local organizations/ and or authorities, depending on their arrival location. In some cases we have contacted local authorities to inform, so that people could be found. When we are contacted by new arrivals on the Greek islands, we make sure to gather enough information, so that we can document their case properly, whenever new arrivals are treated illegally, in violation of international laws and human rights, this information could become crucial as evidence. In most cases we have been able to confirm that the groups have made it safe to a camp, but unfortunately not in all cases. There have also been a few groups we unfortunately have been unable to assist, for reasons outside our control. We are also contacted every night by boats in distress at sea, either after being pushed back or due to engine failure. People contacting from boats at sea seems to be of the impression that organizations can come to their rescue, this is of course not possible, there are no rescue boats in the Aegean Sea, only coast guard. Whenever we are informed of a boat in distress, we immediately inform the appropriate authorities, so that they can be rescued and taken to the nearest port of safety. Recently, off the coast of the Greek island of Chios, 8 people drowned after being forced into a life raft by the Greek coast guard, Greek authorities claim, again, that they are not responsible. We also see a worrying trend in the sea area around Chios, where several people have been wounded, after the Greek coast guard have opened fire directly towards boats carrying refugees, to try to force the boats to stop. In these cases Greek authorities claim they only fired warning shots into the air. If this was indeed true, it’s strange that people then have ended up being taken to Chios hospital with bullets in their upper body. The pictures below represent some of the cases the last six weeks, a total of 80 pictures from these cases are available on our Facebook page. Ee are again sorry for not being able to publish more detailed reports, but our priority is, and must always be, to assist people asking for help first, documenting their cases second, and publishing last. These are difficult times, not only for people on the move, but also for those who support them. We are under tremendous pressure, not only mentally but also financially. It doesn’t matter how strong you are, at some point everyone breaks, especially if you stand alone without support. We haven’t reached that point just yet, and will continue do our utmost for vulnerable people for as long as we can.
