A 94-year-old woman was found dead in Konotop, Sumy region, as a result of a russian strike. She survived the Nazis in WWII — only to be killed by so-called “brotherly” russians decades later. There is no justification. No logic. Just terror.

In 2022 Rheinmetall produced 70,000 artillery shells per year. Today it produces 1.1 million. By 2027 it targets 1.5 million. One European company now manufactures more 155mm ammunition than the entire US defense industry combined (which produced 600,000 shells in 2024). NATO Secretary General Rutte: European artillery production has increased sixfold in two years. The Werk Niedersachsen plant that opened in August 2025 will reach 350,000 shells per year alone, the largest single ammunition facility in Europe. Combined output from EU + UK + Ukraine in 2026 is projected at 2.8 to 3 million shells annually. That matches or exceeds Russia's wartime output. EU defense spending climbed from €218B in 2021 to €381B in 2025. Germany alone went from €47B in 2021 to a planned €162B by 2029, 3.2% of GDP. 17 EU member states have activated the national escape clause for additional defense spending flexibility. The continent that policy commentators wrote off as militarily flaccid is finishing the most rapid industrial mobilization the West has seen since the Cold War.

A weakened and decapitated Iran has more than once appeared to its enemies as easy prey. After the 1979 Iranian revolution, purges of the army and security services were so sweeping that foreign intelligence agencies concluded Iran had lost all military capability. Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein moved to exploit this, launching what he believed would be a limited operation on September 22, 1980, to liberate Iranian Arabs. The bloodless stroll never materialized, and the war dragged on for eight years, killing up to 2,000,000 people.

Russia’s intimidation and provocations against Latvia, Estonia and Lithuania are unacceptable and heighten tensions in the region. We stand firmly with the Baltic States. No Member State should be threatened by Russia. The security of the Baltics is the security of Europe. The EU must remain united, vigilant and resolute against Russian attempts to destabilise its neighbourhood and undermine European security. For centuries, we have been captivated by its pattern. But now it is our turn to create the pattern ourselves – through our lives, our fight, and every new step we take. Every day, Ukrainians embroider it with their own hands – defending what they hold dear, rebuilding what has been destroyed, healing wounds, teaching children, and continuing to learn themselves. We preserve our memory and build the future. Happy Vyshyvanka Day, Ukraine! Celebrating the destiny we embroider in independence!

A good day for Austria's justice system: after a full day of deliberations a jury of 8 convicted Egisto Ott, the former Austrian intelligence operative who spied on me and dozens of other people of interest to the Kremlin, on two counts: abuse of power, and espionage for Russia.

Ukraine called for stripping Russia of its status as a permanent member of the UN Security Council due to its systematic brutal attacks on the peaceful population of Ukraine and its winter energy strikes, with which the Kremlin attempted to force Ukraine to surrender. Russia also openly bombed a UN convoy
Shaun Pinner@ShaunPinnerUA

Despite the UN warning both Ukraine and Russia in advance, Russia still openly bombed a UN convoy, then proudly released the footage through channels linked to Russian drone groups. This is exactly why so many now view Russia’s so-called “humanitarian concerns” as utterly hollow.

Putin completed his visit to China and returned to Russia with almost no concrete results. The only tangible outcome was extending the visa free regime until the end of 2027. No deal was reached on the Power of Siberia 2 gas pipeline despite years of talks and expectations tied to sea supply disruptions. The project remains stalled as China holds a strong negotiating position. Markets reacted negatively with Gazprom shares falling 3.5 percent.

A factory outside Augsburg has been running since the nineteenth century. In 2026, it is running faster than it ever has. The machines make the gearboxes that go inside NATO's main battle tanks. The order book is full. The order book after that is full too. We spent several weeks trying to understand what is actually happening to European defense industry right now through the corporate filings, the order books, the procurement plans, and the factory floors. The numbers are extraordinary. The companies behind them are largely unknown. The technology they are building will define European security for the next twenty years, and will be in civilian hands within a decade. This is that story: open.substack.com/pub/gandalv/p/…

Excellent reporting from @DovLieber . Lot to unpack here. I’m very much onboard with such a campaign (remember, there were 50 plus Americans killed on 10/7 as well). This is of course exactly what I expected/predicted the Israelis to methodically do. They wrote the book on this, post Munich. Much of this theory also drove me in my old world too, post 9/11. Justice must be served, no matter how long it takes. So I’m a believer in such a campaign. What made this reporting most interesting for me, however, is that not everyone shares this. In fact, per below, it was notable that in interviews with some Israeli family members of 10/7 victims, some of of whom were actually not interested in such kinetic retribution. Having participated in similar type CT campaigns in my former life, that is something that I also heard directly at times from American families of terrorism victims as well – what I thought was their need and desire for ultimate justice did not mesh up with their own notion that all killing must stop. Made me think for sure.
Dov Lieber@DovLieber

Since Oct 7, 2023, Israel has been working to capture or kill everyone involved in the attacks from Gaza. In my latest feature for the WSJ, I take readers into the most extensive targeted killing campaign in Israel's history. wsj.com/world/middle-e…
