I am so proud of @HPUMBB for their historic win over Wisconsin this week in the first round of March Madness. (And excited because I picked them to win in my bracket!) My beloved grandfather, Wayne “Tige” Harris, played basketball at High Point College under coach Virgil Yow.

Art is definitely in bloom! Always a treat to get to stop by the @ncartmuseum during this special exhibit where florists design installations inspired by art in the collection. Many thanks to the creative florists and artists from all across NC who make it possible.

Some welcome news for folks forced into temporary housing in western NC by Hurricane Helene: @fema has extended its direct housing and rental assistance programs for another six months. I look forward to continuing to work with local, state, and federal governments and nonprofit organizations to find permanent solutions so people can get back on their feet.

If you know me, you know I love North Carolina. We’re home to friendly and good people, incredible natural beauty, a growing economy, and the best basketball and BBQ in the country. Tourism is vital to our economy. Our economic success is possible only with our hotel managers, museum curators, and guides and outfitters from the mountains to the coast – the folks who work hard to make our state worth discovering and rediscovering.

I was happy to welcome Oklahoma First Lady Sarah Stitt, North Dakota First Lady Kjersti Armstrong, the National Governors Association, and policy teams from around the country to Asheville to discuss youth mental health policies.

The attack on Temple Israel in West Bloomfield, Michigan, is reprehensible. Children were gathered for preschool there in the largest Reform synagogue in the US. I thank the security guard and local law enforcement for acting quickly to protect these kids from harm. Antisemitism has no place in our nation.

Cyril Prabhu founded Proverbs 226 to bring children together with their incarcerated parents to mend relationships and break cycles of incarceration. He showed me around his 5&2 Training Institute, which provides housing and hands-on training for high-wage trades such as welding.

At Anson Correctional, students can obtain a bachelor’s or associate’s degree through Campbell University or learn how to crochet, knit, quilt, or sew. I also appreciated learning about the mental health services they provide for women who have experienced severe trauma.

I join all of North Carolina in mourning the three American service members who died in the Iran attacks. Anna and I are praying for their families. May the memories of these heroes be a blessing.

Promise Resource Network has now opened an innovative peer-run Recovery Hub and Cafe for people with mental health challenges in Raleigh. Thank you to NC DHHS, the Wake County Board of Commissioners, Alliance Health, and everyone who supported this auspicious opening.

Overnight, North Carolina suffered a tragedy when another state trooper was killed in the line of duty in a traffic crash. Master Trooper Steven Perry dedicated his career to keeping people in Durham County safe. Please join me in keeping his loved ones and the law enforcement community in our thoughts and prayers. May his memory be a blessing.

Anna and I stopped by Ms. Winnix’s second grade class at Green Magnet Elementary for Read Across America Day. Investing in the future of North Carolina means investing in our kids and making sure they have the resources they need to excel in the classroom and beyond. That’s why my budget request to the General Assembly includes expanding the Science of Reading curriculum to more grades and the Advanced Teaching Roles initiative.
