Dear friends: I don’t know any Catholic in the United States, from the most traditional to the most progressive, who does not have strong feelings about the comments from President Trump and Vice President Vance about Pope Leo XIV. These include not only President Trump’s initial disrespectful Truth Social post about the Holy Father, but also Vice President Vance’s similarly disrespectful comments about Pope Leo having to be “careful” when he speaks about theology. Let me share some of my own feelings. First of all, it is shocking that a President and Vice President would treat such a good, holy and learned man with such disdain. Imagine telling a man with the Holy Father’s learning and experience (and authority) that he doesn’t understand theology sufficiently. What’s more, imagine attacking him as, ridiculously, “weak on crime” or somehow not understanding foreign policy. Second, I’m edified by Pope Leo’s charitable and courageous response to all this. Charitable because he has not responded in any way other than with charity and respect. As some of you may know, I know the Holy Father slightly, thanks to our being seated together at the Synod for two weeks, and know him to be a kind, reserved, discerning and highly intelligent person. In a word, holy. But courageous too: as we have seen during his time in Algeria and Cameroon, Pope Leo has not shied away from continuing to preach the Gospel, and speaking out in favor of peace (and yes, he understands St. Augustine’s concept of the “just war”) and against, as he said today, tyrants and those who would use God’s name to support violence of bloodshed. So, where will this all end? It’s hard to say. But I would imagine that now that the taboo has been broken, politicians will continue to denigrate him and thus try to persuade people, without saying it explicitly, to think that the Pope’s words do not need to be listened to. But this will be in vain for two reasons. First, Pope Leo is clearly fearless. A few hours after he was elected as pope, I spoke with a fellow Augustinian priest who had known “Bob” for decades. “He’s a great listener, very kind and much loved.” Then he paused. “But he’s no pushover.” But the main reason that the Pope’s words will be heard is less about Robert Prevost’s own many virtues but something else: the Vicar of Christ will be heard because he is preaching the Gospel. As Jesus told his disciples, “Heaven and earth may pass away, but my words will never pass away.” So, in these strange times, fear not.

Trump is now attacking the Pope for speaking out against war while posting images of himself as a messianic figure. This is not only offensive. It is deranged, egomaniacal behavior. When will Republicans in Congress stop blindly following this dangerous and unhinged man?

On Orthodox Easter, President Trump attacked the Pope because the Pope is rightly against Trump’s war in Iran and then he posted this picture of himself as if he is replacing Jesus. This comes after last week’s post of his evil tirade on Easter and then threatening to kill an entire civilization. I completely denounce this and I’m praying against it!!!

The Trump administration summoned a Vatican diplomat to the Pentagon, and during the tense meeting a U.S. official invoked the Avignon Papacy. On July 4, the American pope will be in Lampedusa -- he didn't pick that date by accident. @TheFP thefp.com/p/why-the-vati…

BREAKING: JD Vance initially says he doesn't know who Cardinal Christophe Pierre is — until recently Pope Leo XIV’s ambassador to the United States — then, once reminded, declines to comment on the Pentagon's January meeting with the cardinal or on the ”bitter lecture” Under Secretary Elbridge Colby is said to have delivered to the Holy See.

A CALL TO REVERENCE AND TRUTH   In recent days, an Easter message from President Donald Trump has drawn attention – not because of its clarity in proclaiming the Resurrection of Jesus Christ, but because of language that was careless, irreverent, and theologically confused.   This must be addressed – not as a matter of politics, but as a matter of truth.   Easter Sunday is the holiest day in the Christian calendar. It is the day on which the Church proclaims with unwavering certainty that Jesus Christ, true God and true Man, rose from the dead. Death was conquered. Sin was defeated. The gates of Heaven were opened.   This is not a day for casual speech. It is not a day for vulgarity. And it is not a day for confusion about who God is.   When coarse or profane language is used in reference to so sacred a mystery, it reveals something deeper than a momentary lapse – it reflects a loss of the sense of the sacred. And when religious language is blended carelessly, as though all expressions of belief are interchangeable, it obscures the truth that has been entrusted to us.   The Catholic Church teaches that there is one God. But she also proclaims that this one God has revealed Himself fully and definitively in Jesus Christ. Easter is not a generic celebration of “God.” It is the proclamation that Jesus Christ is risen.   To substitute clarity with ambiguity – even unintentionally – is to diminish the power of that proclamation.   As Catholics, our allegiance is not to any political figure, party, or movement. Our allegiance is to Jesus Christ, who is “the way, and the truth, and the life” (John 14:6). Therefore, we must be willing to speak with honesty and charity when something falls short of that truth – no matter who speaks it.   This is not about condemnation. It is about calling all people – especially those in positions of influence – to a higher standard worthy of the name of Christ.   If we lament the loss of faith in the world, we must also recognize the loss of reverence. If we grieve confusion, we must recommit ourselves to clarity. And if we desire renewal, it must begin with a return to the sacred.   Easter demands more. It demands that we speak of God with reverence. It demands that we proclaim Christ with clarity. And it demands that we live as witnesses to the truth that the tomb is empty and that Jesus Christ is Lord.   Let us not lower that standard. Let us rise to it.   May Almighty God bless you, in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Amen.   Bishop Joseph E. Strickland Bishop Emeritus

My statement re Prohibiting the Latin Patriarch of entering Church of Holy Sepulcher on Palm Sunday: While all Holy sites in the Old City are closed due to safety concerns for mass gatherings including the Western Wall, Church of the Holy Sepulcher and Al Aqsa Mosque, the action today by the Israel Nat'l Police to deny Latin Patriarch Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa and 3 other priests from entering the Church to offer a blessing on Palm Sunday is an unfortunate overreach already having major repercussions around the world.  Home Front Command Guidelines restrict any gatherings to 50 people or less.  The 4 representatives of the Catholic Church were well below that restriction.  Statements from the Gov't of Israel indicate the action to prohibit Cardinal Pizzaballa entry to the Church of the Holy Sepulcher were for safety reasons, but churches, synagogues, and mosques throughout Jerusalem have met with the restrictions of 50 or less.  For the Patriarch to be barred from entry to the Church on Palm Sunday for a private ceremony is difficult to understand or justify. Israel has indicated it will work with the Patriarch to accommodate a safe means of carrying out Holy Week activities.
