A Historic First: The Bible in Moroccan Darija
In 1999, I had the honor of being the first person to coordinate the translation of the Bible into the Moroccan dialect (Darija). The project began with a small group of Moroccan Christians from a Muslim background. We worked under difficult conditions, facing security challenges and many obstacles along the way.
With the help of qualified experts, proper training, and the right tools, we persevered. The translation underwent multiple stages of verification and review and was ultimately approved by the United Bible Societies.
When I left Morocco in 2005, the work continued under a new coordinator. Today, after 26 years, we celebrate the completion of the full Bible—both the Old and New Testaments—translated into Moroccan Darija for the first time in history. This marks a true milestone.
This translation is significant not only for Moroccan Christians, but also for Moroccan Jews, as the Torah has been translated, and for all Moroccans in general. It demonstrates that the Moroccan dialect is fully capable of conveying the depth and richness of both Jewish and Christian Scriptures.
It is the first religious holy book ever translated entirely into Moroccan Darija.
