@joachimnicolas Well... not quite. There's still the electric traction motors and gearboxes to factor in. I don't know what they weigh, but it must be less than the diesel/hydraulic equivalent. Bottom line is that battery-electric is heavier. It's a compromise.

@FOSBR Very good article, my only note would be that discontinuous electrification doesn't really work for freight in the same way it does for passengers. There'll definitely be a place for it in the railways going forward, but I worry that it will be over-used in place of proper OLE!

@joachimnicolas I'm really glad you asked that question! A Class 166 unit lugs round about 3.5 tonnes of diesel engines plus 2 tonnes of hydraulic transmission. Incidentally only half the batteries were in use for the trial.
