Why it's a social construct Names are socially assigned: Human naming practices are cultural—parents/society give names based on sex, tradition, family, etc. They're arbitrary labels for individuals, changeable via legal processes (e.g., marriage, adoption, personal preference). Calling someone by a historical or birth name isn't inherently "violent"; context matters (e.g., discussing past events, legal records, or courtesy). The taboo is invented and enforced socially: The specific prohibition on "deadnaming" only for gender transitions, plus the loaded language ("dead," equating it to harm), is a recent ideological product. It relies on the contested premise that subjective gender identity fully overrides observable biological sex and personal history. Without that framework, it's just using a previous name—like referring to Cassius Clay before Muhammad Ali, or any name change for non-gender reasons. Critics argue this elevates feelings over shared reality, history, or accuracy (e.g., in journalism, biology, or records). Philosophical takes: Some analyses treat deadnames as taboo violations that cause distress through social attachment, not inherent linguistic magic. Others explore semantics (names as predicates carrying normative claims). Either way, the impact and rules around it are socially negotiated, not biologically fixed.

@d_invenzione @ok_post_guy Names are social constructs though? You might not accept he is trans but at the very least you can accept someone legally changing their name

@ok_post_guy Using the term "deadnaming" is a ridiculous social construct. Stop playing into social constructs. No one cares what she calls herself. She isn’t a good enough actress to pull off playing a legendary Greek hero. She’s mediocre at pretending to be a teenage boy.

Just a reminder that the Wales squad for the summer internationals will be announced today. Interesting to see which new faces are included, with young Exeter No 8 Kane James expected to receive the call.

A student from India who does not hold British citizenship and is here on a temporary visa has just been elected to the Scottish parliament to serve a four-year term (salary £80,000 per year). How in God’s name can something like this be allowed to happen? Our democracy is sick.

@AlfonsoBonzo @LukeSmalley27 @blondehunx Didn’t say they had in fairness. But you do have to look at who would be more willing to accept a decrease in living standards, UK doctors can just go to Can/Aus/NZ But package is still better for foreign born doctors, but package abroad is better for UK doctors now than it was

@AlfonsoBonzo @LukeSmalley27 @blondehunx So looking at it from the perspective of a GP as that is what I have experience of (Mum was one). The pension is much worse now, it’s based on career average not final salary. And the incentive for being a partner is much less now as the pay is barely more than a locum.

@KineticInnerG @ShahzebSN @helloshinko @RealEmirHan Oh I agree, I’m not sure he would be my first choice though by a long stretch I feel like they’ve always gone with more of an unknown quantity for bond and that works well, because you think it’s James Bond not a famous actor. If Elordi gets it all you’ll see is Elordi

Amazon/MGM is reportedly pushing for Jacob Elordi to lead the James Bond (2028) reboot. He is in “pole position” to be cast as next JAMES BOND, according to multiple sources He’s reportedly met with Denis Villeneuve If cast, he’d be the youngest James Bond ever.

@ShahzebSN @helloshinko @RealEmirHan In fairness I was thinking after I sent that tweet that superman probably does, but obviously being a superhero alien it’s not as relatable as someone like James Bond
