Watching football highlights without seeing the result in the video title or thumbnail will be an issue during the World Cup. ▶️ I've built a website to try and solve this issue. It isn't perfect yet and just a fun project! Any feedback appreciated. ⚽️ spoilerfreefootball.lovable.app

Bemusing that stepping across the defender and protecting the ball is not awarded as a foul now if the defender knocks you over from behind. I am so glad that this didn't impact the result. Outstanding bit of play from Spence!

@FPLSportScience @JakubJakub91 This is the difference, I'd agree if he got his arse in front of him but he didn't, he's stretching out his leg which isn't forcing Bobb round him It's not too dissimilar to what konsa did Vs ghana

@FPLSportScience I'm sure you meant to say the attacker tripped himself. He flopped as soon as he put the leg across. Barely any contact and went down. Should have been sent off for simulation

@FPLSportScience You honestly think Spence goes down in a natural fashion? Looks at the man’s legs 😂. Look, he tried to be clever/cheat to gain an advantage. He failed. It’s all now irrelevant. But don’t misconstrue what he did, with the skill of putting your body between a defender & ball.

@mdudley1894 I don't think so. He only goes to the ground after the contact on the back of his knee.

Shielding the ball and drawing the foul is totally legitimate. But that’s not what Spence was doing. It was obvious from the way he went to ground that he was more interested in initiating contact than retaining possession of the ball. A subtle but crucial difference.

@EirikHasselberg That's an independent incident. I didn't comment on that.

@thehoopsicle He clearly didn't throw himself down. He's starts going down after the contact.

@FPLSportScience Completely missing the nuance here. Getting between the defender and the ball to increase the chances of being taken down is excellent play. Just sticking a leg in front of said defender and then throwing yourself down is basically cheating. Never a penalty, correct call.

@ToonFan14 I'd hold the same opinion if it was Haaland. I think this is very different to the example with Kane and Mpabbé where they are already falling and force contact.

One of the most jarring things about trying to talk about football on here. People cannot speak honestly or without bias. And it’s tiresome. Spence knew what he was doing. It wasn’t a natural movement. And it wasn’t a penalty. Opinions would be different if at the other end.

@JakubJakub91 Because it prevents your opponent getting to the ball. They have to get round you or foul you.

@FPLSportScience How are you protecting the ball by moving your leg towards the opponent, and by ignoring the ball? Great call by the ref. The only way to avoid such foul by Bobb would be to break the laws of physics and change the direction of running immediately

@HACKETTREF I’m with @alanshearer’s commentary, when did an attacking player stop being allowed to get in front of the defender and make the defender have to avoid bringing him down. Strikers used to always be allowed to get in front of a defender and protect the ball they’re in control of

@DougieCritchley I agree on the team finding a way but I don't think Tuchel deserves praise for that performance other than some well timed subs, which have been great all tournament. Overall we were poor and got lucky, as he said.

I think in any normal year... If England went into a quarter-final against a side that had comfortably knocked out Brazil... With Saka, Rice and James not fit to start, Livramento already ruled out, another right-back option in Quansah suspended... and a potential Rice replacement having broken his arm in a freak accident... AND the game coming just 5 days after one of the most exhilarating, gruelling England matches of all-time... beating Mexico, in the Azteca... a place they hadn't lost since 2013... And you concede the 1st goal, for the 2nd time in 3 knock-out matches... I think a lot of manager's would panic and think "man, this might not be our year." Not Tuchel. He finds a way and his team, which are so, so gritty and determined, find a way. What a guy!

Even if we'd somehow won the last Euros final against Spain, I think the right decision would have been to move on from Southgate.

Knock out football is mad. We were poor yesterday but won. Last World Cup, we played so well against France. Southgate's most impressive performance, yet we lost. Two years later we were awful, yet nearly won the Euros. So much variance makes it so nuts but so entertaining.

@FPLSportScience I think Argentina have also been very lucky. Switzerland were more than a match for them until the controversial red card. Egypt really should have beaten them. Heck, they just barely scraped by Cape Verde. We have every chance of making the final 🤞

I think we were very lucky yesterday. Not Euro 2024 levels of fortunate but fortunate, nonetheless. I want to believe we can win the World Cup but my head and heart are telling me very different thing. Even getting to a final would be so special. So excited for Wednesday! 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

@D_C_W I want to believe it so badly Dave but I fear we will be humbled by either Argentina or France. I think we were very fortunate yesterday. Not Euro 2024 levels of fortunate but fortunate. Actually, nah, we're gonna win it. COME ON ENGLAAAAND!

I felt proud to be English yesterday, watching both the football and Paddington The Musical. Paddington was wonderful. Amazing music and story celebrating kindness and multiculturalism. Paddington and Jude Bellingham are role models I'd be delighted for my son to have. 🐻 🦁🦁🦁

A bear-y exciting curtain call! There’s a huge round of a-paws at the world premiere of Paddington The Musical as the new musical opens in London 🍊🐻
