I was honoured to deliver the keynote address at the launch of the “Justice in Critical Minerals Governance and Energy Transitions Project,” a @UKRI_News Future Leaders Fellowship led by Dr Clement Sefa-Nyarko, during #KingsAfricaWeek at the African Leadership Centre @ALC_KCL, King’s College London @KingsCollegeLon.
My remarks examined Africa’s central place in the global energy transition and the urgent need for stronger governance of the continent’s mineral wealth. Africa holds a significant share of the critical minerals required for clean energy technologies, but the continent continues to face the familiar paradox of abundance without broad based development. The central question remains who benefits, who bears the costs, and who decides.
I argued that the global energy transition presents both opportunity and risk. Without deliberate policy choices, it could reproduce extractive patterns that have long limited Africa’s economic transformation. With stronger institutions, regional coordination, value addition and accountable governance, critical minerals can support industrialisation, innovation and inclusive growth across the continent.
I emphasised that just transition should also address the realities of mining communities. This means that environmental protection, labour standards, transparent revenue systems and community participation should accompany extraction. In essence, the shift to clean energy cannot rely on ecological damage or social injustice in the regions that supply the minerals.
I also suggested the need to consider stronger collective coordination among resource rich countries, including the possibility of an Organization of Minerals Producing Countries, similar in principle to Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries. Such a platform could strengthen bargaining power, improve coordination on production, pricing and supply chains, and ensure that resource rich countries play a more decisive role in shaping the governance of the emerging critical minerals economy. This kind of cooperation could help align mineral extraction with fair value capture, technology transfer and long term development priorities.
Finally, Africa must move from being a supplier of raw materials to a strategic partner in global value chains. As I have maintained at different fora, transformative leadership, policy coherence and continental cooperation will determine whether this moment leads to structural transformation or another cycle of dependency.

Across key sectors, we are turning plans into meaningful progress for all our people, ensuring that no one is left behind. Our Farmers are receiving the support they need, students are being relieved through purposeful interventions, businesses are being empowered to grow, while our healthcare system and critical infrastructure continue to strengthen.
We remain deeply committed to inclusive governance, expanding opportunities and support for Persons With Disabilities, and ensuring that every Ekiti citizen, regardless of ability, can participate, thrive, and live with dignity.
With the agro-allied cargo Airport opening new economic pathways, we are unlocking growth, creating jobs, and building shared prosperity for present and future generations.

Today, I had the honour of joining the Vice President, H.E. Senator Kashim Shettima, to unveil the newly constructed Omisanjana—Deeper Life—Ajebandele Road, Ado-Ekiti. This road is of great importance for our urban renewal project, providing great socioeconomic benefits and improved mobility.
The previous administration, under H.E. Dr. Kayode Fayemi @kfayemi, started the initiative to build the road, and I am delighted that we have successfully completed the project in line with our continuity and shared prosperity agenda. The completion of this project will open our State's capital to further expansion, reduce travel time, alleviate commuters' stress, and enhance connectivity.
Our administration is fully committed to making our State an attractive destination for work, living, and investment.

I am pleased to learn that the first-ever Independent Power Project (IPP) in Ekiti State has been completed and commissioned by my successor, Governor Biodun Oyebanji @biodunaoyebanji.
Two years ago, we initiated this project in response to the very poor #electricity supply to Ekiti through the national grid system. We recognised that the only way to prevent this issue from further negatively impacting our socioeconomic and industrial growth was to provide a significant and innovative intervention.
This led us to enter into a partnership with Fenchurch Power Ltd @Fenchurchgroup to independently generate power for the consumption of the state, in addition to what is obtainable from the national grid. With the success of this project, I believe that investors within the power sector will take advantage of the "willing seller, willing buyer" template.
Kayode Fayemi@kfayemi
A year ago, our administration promised to find solutions to the lingering shortage of electricity supply into Ekiti State. To this end, we entered into a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) agreement with Fen-Church Power Nigeria Ltd to build 5MW Independent Power Plant (IPP).
