When discussing costumes, we realized that all of Yuzuru Hanyu's SP world records were achieved in blue costumes. In the spirit of @rockerskating's #gratuitousfashiontweets, we ran a statistical analysis of highest score vs mean blueness and found a 75% correlation.

@KikokuDMint @ilyasleftnipple Ah, celiac's? Yes, a less well-known consequence of celiac's disease is increased risk of mucosal infections (e.g., catch via respiratory tract) because of impaired IgA. Can also cause skin and vascular damage. Sorry to hear what you went through; late diagnosis is frustrating

@FSkatech @ilyasleftnipple it makes sense in that way, when i am now glutened, i am more vulnerable to catching things. whereas when i was a child and diagnosed until 31, i was constantly more prone to sickness because my immune system was preoccupied destroying my organs instead.

@KikokuDMint @ilyasleftnipple Analogy: think of it like your immune system's playing a video game. Vaccines are like giving instructions on how to win. Usually works, but sometimes the game updates and changes (mutations), and sometimes the player's controls malfunction (immunodeficient). Still easier to beat

@KikokuDMint @ilyasleftnipple Viruses can evade vaccines by mutating (like current ebola strain). The more stable the virus, the better vaccines work. Chickenpox and measles are usually very stable, so vaccines are very effective. Covid and flu mutate a lot, so vaccines are less effective. Still makes milder

@tranche_cheddar Top ACT/SAT/PSAT exam math tip is when in doubt, pick the answer that is most like the others. If 3 of 5 answers are negative, the correct answer is likely negative. If most have sqrt(2), or 1/2, etc., that is most likely in the correct answer. Very effective.

@filmbitten My longstanding theory is more author involvement leads to better adaptations. Best book to movie is The Princess Bride. The author wrote the screenplay; kept the best aspects of the book while changing the worst. Film was like the final, polished version of the tale.

a lot of films don’t live up to the books they’re adapted from, but what are some movies you think are *better* than the book they’re based on? i’ll start!

@elenagarabatos @ilyasleftnipple Thank you for helping me practice! (I'm a medical student. I have had bad doctor experiences with my own chronic illnesses, so I'm committed to not becoming one of them. Patient-centered care, communication, and public health are important!)

@elenagarabatos @ilyasleftnipple Glad to hear! I wish everyone had access to vaccines and information about them, but it's unfortunately not yet reality, even in affluent countries. Hence, I try to err on the side of over explaining

@turntineforwhat PSA: if you encounter antifreeze poisoning, the best diy treatment is a lot of alcohol. The antifreeze itself isn't the problem: the liver enzymes convert it to a toxin. Giving booze overwhelms the system so it can't make the toxin. Same mechanism as the drug treatment fomepizole

@elenagarabatos @ilyasleftnipple Very painful since it's a nerve infection; important to catch early. The shingles vax is standard for preventative care age 50+, so it should be covered by insurance in the US. It can occur in younger patients, usually stress-induced, but it's less likely

@elenagarabatos @ilyasleftnipple As to a possible "why," vaccines are, unfortunately, not 100% effective at preventing infection, but they usually at least make it milder. The standard is 2 doses because the 1 dose regimen had many breakthroughs. Unfortunately, some people are in the unlucky minority :/

@elenagarabatos @ilyasleftnipple So sorry to hear that! Viruses are awful. When she's older, I highly recommend getting a shingles vaccine since the virus that causes chickenpox remains dormant in nerves and can reactivate as shingles later. Red flag is rash developing in a straight line, maybe with burning pain

@MsValerieChaos The liver is remarkably resilient. Alcoholic fatty liver disease is reversible until fibrous tissue forms, then it becomes cirrhosis, which is irreversible. There's a shortage of livers to transplant. Not ideal condition, but can heal itself and help someone.

@Dinolil11 @ilyasleftnipple Vaccinating for measles is also important because it's extremely contagious. It is about R18 meaning one sick person infects an average of 18 people, so it spreads rapidly. Herd immunity requires 95% vaccination rate, so vaccine misinformation and distrust leads to outbreaks.

@ItsMrsRabbitToU Surprised more schools don't cover this. Mitochondria have their own DNA called mtDNA (see endosymbiosis), and the egg cell contributes the cytoplasm and cellular machinery, like ribosomes, while the sperm only contributes DNA, so all mtDNA is from the maternal egg cell.

@ilyasleftnipple I've seen articles suggesting SARS-CoV-2 and the other coronavirae can cause similar loss of existing immunity, thus facilitating breakthrough infections, though I haven't dug much since it's not my area of expertise. Basically, viruses are whack and out to get you.

@ilyasleftnipple It's why measles outbreaks can be harbingers of other preventable diseases since the measles destroys immunity leaving people vulnerable. If someone gets measles, they should repeat all vaccinations and any they had natural immunity to, like chickenpox.

@caitlin_hebron Biomagnification. The amount accumulates up the food chain too since successive predators are ingesting multiple affected organisms. Classic example is mercury levels being highest in fish at the top of the food chain like swordfish, especially pre-1980 Clean Water Act.

pesticides also dont just affect insects! if a spider ingests pesticide, and is then eaten by a small bird, that bird is also ingesting the pesticide. if that small bird is eaten by a bigger bird, that bird is also ingesting the pesticide. it follows up the food chain!
rio 🪲 bug oomf@colligocritters

Such a cruel and torturous way to die. Pesticides do this to all these small and helpless animals. There are better ways to "get rid" of "unwanted" critters in your garden - not like this, not through making them live through hell until they eventually die of dehydration
