Every so often, a Victorian shop or gin palace, rich with joyfully vulgar excess, is swapped out for another modernist lump, bereft of fun or detail. Marks & Spencer’s recently approved proposal to demolish their fine Art Deco department store and replace it with “could be anywhere” spreadsheet architecture is particularly heartless. This is gorgeous, and exactly the sort of idea that gets labelled or rather condemed as "pastiche". I think we should reclaim the word and use "pastiche" as a badge of honour. People bloomin' like it, you know!

While the French celebrate the rebuilding of Notre Dame, the National Trust has decided to leave the majestic Clandon Park as an evocative ruin following its devastating fire. History will not remember this decision kindly. It must be rebuilt, they have the insurance money

@Shanghai_Rose @jambojimmysp The original Georgian building was a fake Roman building, being Neo classical. Did you dislike that too?

This is a tweet posted in 2019. #Clandon should do the same. Replace what was lost, faithfully. What is the point of heritage legislation if that isn’t done?

@THE_LHC @TradNorm @russellcurtis @ABell2019 @yuanyi_z We have some of the best plasterwork craftsmen and women in the world. It would be a great opportunity for them. If it was restored to its former glory, everyone would be incredibly proud of the result, like the French are proud of Notre Dame.

@THE_LHC @russellcurtis @ABell2019 @yuanyi_z The damage caused by the bombing of Coventry was obviously culturally significant. Clandon Park having a fire during restoration…not so much, I would suggest.

@ABell2019 @FTerryArchitect @yuanyi_z Quango run by bureaucrats? The trustees put forward their plan, and the astro turf organisation Restore Trust put forward their own desire to have it fully restored. The members voted for this plan. Jog on.
