Results from a focused ultrasound clinical trial are offering hope for glioblastoma (GBM) patients. The study found that focused ultrasound-induced blood-brain barrier opening before chemotherapy in GBM patients is safe and feasible. This approach also showed a likely improvement in overall survival (40% increase compared with a matched control group), marking the first time a potential survival benefit has been reported for this technique. This #BrainAwarenessWeek, we’re highlighting research exploring how focused ultrasound may help address challenging brain tumors such as neuroblastoma, glioblastoma, and diffuse midline glioma (DMG). Researchers are studying how noninvasive focused ultrasound can be used to target tumor tissue, enhance the effects of other therapies (such as chemotherapy or radiation), and temporarily open the blood–brain barrier to improve drug delivery. A newly published first-in-human clinical trial shows that sonodynamic therapy (SDT) using focused ultrasound was safe and well-tolerated in nine patients with recurrent high-grade gliomas. Researchers at @IvyBrainTumCtr used focused ultrasound to activate a compound that collects in tumor cells, triggering a reaction that can damage and kill those cancer cells in targeted areas. High-grade gliomas such as glioblastoma (GBM) remain among the most difficult brain cancers to treat once they recur, making new approaches like this especially important. Learn more: bit.ly/4176uSB
