Concur 100%. US expat who grew up in Spain here. Parents let me go to bars at 17 (as did most of my classmates) didn’t get a DL til summer I went to college and didn’t really drive much til 20 because I didn’t have a car. Freshman year my classmates were getting hammered on/off campus, I’d already been thru that phase.

Since this got some traction, I’ll repeat an unpopular position: If we really cared about keeping our kids alive on the roads, we’d swap the drinking and driving ages. Drink at 16, drive at 21. Would save thousands of lives per year. There’s no way I should have been entrusted with a 300hp, two-ton land missile at age 16. I’m lucky that I only got speeding tickets, and never hit anybody.

Yet another friend with a child turning 16 next week. Hasn’t gotten a learner’s permit. Zero interest in a driver’s license. I keep hearing this same story. What’s WRONG with these kids?!?! On my 16th birthday, my mom took me out of school to take my driving test. Same for everyone I knew. Even if you couldn’t afford your own car, you could beg the use of the family station wagon occasionally. Freedom. Independence. Heck, privacy on a date! Are these kids giving all that up for scrolling TikTok and an occasional Uber?

My friend’s girlfriend got a DM from a random old guy offering her $150,000K to sleep with her/take her out idk. My friend told her if she does it, the relationship is over. Her response: “It’s one time. I’ll pay off your student loans, cover your rent for a year, and we’ll still have money left over.” Is he crazy for saying no, or is she crazy for thinking this is even a discussion?

They knowingly violated the law, but, as a former commander, I’d call these guys in and remind them what their expectations are. But, then clear them to fly again and place the report in my top drawer to never be looked back into. My commander did this for me when I did something similar. It stuck with me my entire career.

My greatest accomplishment as a writer. I'll tell you. In 1990 I moved to Livingston, Montana, a town of about 7000. Not long afterwards, the federal government decided to close old downtown post offices across America and replace them with car-friendly facilities on the outskirts. Well, as it happened Livingston's downtown post office was the grandest building in town, with a wide marble outdoor staircase that functioned as a center for sharing news, miscellaneous socializing, and nonstop acts of courtesy as people helped others carry packages or negotiate the sometimes icy steps in winter. When I saw that our post office was marked for closure -- a grievous wound to our soul and our small commercial district -- I wrote an essay decrying the whole policy for Time Magazine. In short order, Montana's senior US Senator at the time, Max Baucus, swept into the Livingston post office with aides and made a scene. The kind of scene thst politicians serving their real constituencies should make. And not only was our local post office spared, the overall federal policy was changed, which benefited town centers across the country. As I say, best thing I ever did with written words.

You should’ve brought me with you. I play the role of the bitchy redhead exceptionally well, and I could’ve had you out of there in under two hours. 🤣 And never use dealer financing. I don’t care what you’re buying. Bring your own financing or pay cash, then refinance later if it makes sense. Somehow they still manage to drag the process out. They’ve done it to me when I paid cash, and they’ve done it when I walked in with financing already secured. It’s one of the most annoying parts of buying a vehicle.
