@StevenGlinert I see this in academia too. Professors convinced their critical theory seminar contributes more to society than whatever tech, engineering people, or even plumbers do — and that they should be paid and celebrated accordingly. That's probably where the journalists learned it.

I think it would be healthy for most tech bros to socialize just a little bit with the Brooklyn lefty journalist types to get a sense for why things like this happen: There’s very little ideology there. Just disdain and jealousy. They have a sort of permasneer that seems outwardly pretentious and maybe even cultured but it really does disguise a tacit approval for violence. They’d never do violence themselves. Thats below them. But they’ll push journalism that villainizes their chosen enemies, consequences be what they may.

@anthonyjkreider That is my complaint. Read my Substack. I’m their chair. My job is to build a strong department, not protect underperformance. If someone won’t meet basic expectations, they should be replaced by someone who will.

@FacultyLeaks That would be fine it that's your complaint. But you don't want them to be better, you want them to leave - so that you can have what they have.

@FacultyLeaks "You need to give up what you have so that I can have what I want" certainly is an interesting way to go through life.

@TobyPhln They learned in grad school that performative outrage gets attention and shapes institutions. They were right — for a while. The ivory tower rewarded it. The real world has different feedback mechanisms. facultyleaks.com/p/effs-departu…

CENSORSHIP: The new team at The Electronic Frontier Foundation is the perfect example of an NGO that surrendered to DEI. It's social media manager, they/them, announced the EFF was leaving due to a lack of reach despite it being 1,200% higher than on Instagram & 22,000% higher than on TikTok.

This is by far the best post I have seen about the current state of the EFF. A calm and thorough description of how the culture changed, and why so many people are upset that they aren't a big tent anymore. We need everyone that cares about the electronic frontier to work together. That is how we stay successful. Infighting just makes us all less effective.

EFF just announced it's leaving X. A former employee of 18 years called what's happened to the organization "an enormous personal tragedy." He's right. And it started in graduate school. New post. facultyleaks.com/p/effs-departu…

Air Katakana@airkatakana

how did every libertarian organization get taken over by leftists who believe in the exact opposite of the original mission? reddit was the canary in the coal mine but somehow it is still happening, even now after woke has died down

@LysanderBoomer Perfect summary. The only thing I'd add: it doesn't start at the organization. It starts in the classroom. Graduate school selects for this worldview before anyone gets near a job title at EFF or anywhere else. The pipeline is the problem. facultyleaks.com/p/effs-departu…

Be the EFF, a union between techno-libertarians and progressives. Spend decades fighting against censorship and for freedom online. See broad bipartisan appeal and receive praise. In the 2020s, progressives begin to take over, pushing "justice" and UN human rights mandates instead of original focused mandate. Slowly alienate libertarian-right support. 2026, leadership change, full progressive takeover. Seeing that they've alienated their bases they leave X because of crashing engagement (due to progressive takeover), dislike of Elon (he didn't want to enforce the UN speech restrictions on here), and general virtue signal among progressives that X is bad and anyone who engages is in the out group. Conquest's second law proven, yet again.

EFF just announced they are logging off X after nearly 20 years, a few weeks after naming @NicoleOzer as their next executive director. Ozer (20+ years at the left-wing ACLU, UC Law, Berkeley Law, and deep in the San Francisco progressive scene) has only been active on Bluesky, not X. And suddenly: 'logging off X' for Bluesky and Mastodon is 'overdue'? Coincidence? Or the predictable result when a Bay Area activist takes the wheel at a once great digital rights organization?

After almost twenty years on the platform, EFF is logging off of X. This isn’t a decision we made lightly, but it might be overdue. 🧵(1/5)

@octal .@ReclaimTheNetHQ is probably the closest thing right now. It’s more of a newsletter than a full advocacy org, but it does the early-stage work @EFF used to do well: flagging issues, exposing bad policy, and explaining the risks before they go mainstream.

The mediocrity starts early! My friend teaches elementary school and isn’t allowed to give the students less than 50% on any assignment - even if it’s submitted blank. Yesterday, one of her students called her a bitch repeatedly and told her she was going to smash her face in with a brick. The principal “had a talk” with her and sent her back to class. She hates her job.

New anonymous account. I'm a tenured professor and department chair at a university that shall remain unnamed. I write about what doesn't make it into the Chronicle or the faculty senate minutes: — Travel reimbursement abuse — Rigged hiring searches — Unions weaponized against accountability — The protection of mediocrity — The slow credentialing of incompetence — That time we hired a terrorist Also the sex stuff. There's always sex stuff. Some identifying details have been changed. The dysfunction has not. FacultyLeaks.com

@airkatakana A lot of it starts in academia. Graduate school doesn't just train researchers. It filters for ideological conformity. The people running those organizations learned which ideas were acceptable long before they got the job. The pipeline is the problem.
