We’ve been making important progress with providing free menstrual products - we can’t ignore the needs of women and people with disabilities in addressing period poverty.

Managing your period can be difficult enough, without someone in a head office deciding that they have a better idea than you of what products work best - particularly if you’re managing needs related to chronic pain, motor impairment, executive function, or limited mobility.

Access to appropriate menstrual products is vital for dignity, health, hygiene and participation. Removing a woman’s ability to access the products and supports that she needs to meet her disability-specific needs is regressive and cruel.

The fact that anything that helps someone manage menstruation is considered a ‘lifestyle' product is laughable. Anyone who has had to deal with periods knows bleeding isn’t a lifestyle choice.

This issue ties into persistent period poverty in Australia. According to Share the Dignity’s 2024 Bloody Big Survey Report, 78% of people with disabilities already struggle to afford period products. This would only exacerbate the problem. Submit now: engage.dss.gov.au/consultation-o…

Q: “If not, what changes would you suggest?” A: Menstrual products should be included as assistive products for personal care under the NDIS. These products are essential for people with disabilities who require adaptive solutions to manage their periods safely and hygienically.

The govt is developing new rules about NDIS Supports. Alarmingly, their list of the types of supports that might be captured categorises menstrual products as ‘lifestyle-related’, which means they would no longer be funded under the NDIS. engage.dss.gov.au/consultation-o… @WWDA_AU 1/
