Universities need to get on board and back a student ombudsman with teeth or risk even more students facing sexual violence on campus. Students need universities that care about their safety, not just their money.

This is abhorrent. Students deserve to feel safe at universities and their educators should be at the core of ensuring this. It is unacceptable that a Vice chancellor should be allowed to stay in their role with these allegations. #Bridget Heywood MUST step aside.

The NUS Women’s Department is proud to be one of 70+ orgs calling for the NSW Govt to remove the requirement to prove injury in Victims Support applications. It is traumatic to have to retell your story. Establishing an act of violence should be enough. ow.ly/TUgO50JQaeW

The right wing and conservative ‘pro-life’ argument is ridiculous and hypocritical. In the US where there is no universal health care or paid family leave, and where they value the rights of owning a gun over children’s safety, the ‘pro-life’ advocacy ends at a child’s birth.

The decision by the US Supreme Court to overturn Roe v. Wade today is incredibly distressing and disturbing. I’m not sure how many times it has to be said but this decision does not ban abortions, it only bans safe ones.

The decision by FINA to exclude transwomen from competing at elite levels is nothing short of exclusionary. It sends the message to all levels of sport, from community to elite, that discrimination is okay - and this shouldn’t be tolerated. Sport should be for all.

STATEMENT: SPORT IS FOR ALL The NUS Queer/LGBTQIA+ and @NUSWomens Departments condemns the recent trans exclusionary policy decision made by FINA (the world’s governing body for swimming) to exclude Transwomen from participating in women’s swimming competively.

Yesterday, The National Student Safety Survey results were released and here's what we found out... (although we don't need a survey to tell us what we already know - that sexual assault and harassment is rife on our campuses and universities aren't doing enough)

The National Student Safety Survey has found a 150% increase in sexual assaults occurring at University colleges and accommodation. Absolutely shameful. Universities must take greater responsibility for what goes on at these colleges. (1/2)

Tomorrow morning, the National Safety Survey is going to be released and we are not optimistic. 5 years of inaction have followed the 2017 Change the Course Survey. The stories we are hearing are heartbreaking. Students deserve better.

Considering that we have a long way to go in achieving gender equality and liberation for all women, I encourage everyone to reflect on the critical role you play in dismantling these barriers and ending the endemic of sexual violence and abuse within society and on our campuses.

Particularly with regard to the COVID-19 pandemic over the past couple years, the disproportionate effects felt by women only serves to highlight existing gender inequalities.
