Some people will disagree, but if Britain was closer to Ann Widdecombe’s views than to Andy Burnham’s views, then this country would be in a much better place. Progress for the sake of progress has certainly contributed to Britain becoming a low-trust society.

Labour's abuse of parliamentary procedure must stop! From the failed Chagos deal to the flawed assisted suicide bill, Labour is seeking to limit scrutiny, and is treating Parliament with contempt. Me @theLDNstandard standard.co.uk/comment/labour…

I wish some on the Left would apply a basic sense test to their 'research'. If landlords really were making a 70% pre-tax profit margin, as this report claims, people would be flooding into the sector - instead, they're fleeing in droves.

Having entered politics a couple of years ago from the world of business, there was a veteran politician with whom I met regularly. Someone I had immense respect for and would invariably offer counsel and wisdom which I found incredibly helpful. I found it remarkable that someone so diminutive in stature could be such a towering presence in any room. We would discuss challenges and opportunities.
Ann Widdecombe always had time to discuss things in detail, was genuinely motivated to help, and her presence radiated empathy and warmth. I could also be assured that where she disagreed with a view that I had, she would be direct and forthright in explaining why. I recall being struck by just how relevant the wisdom of a lady in her late seventies still was in this hyper-modern era. I will always be grateful to Ann and remember those lunches and long tea meetings at Reform HQ with immense fondness. She gave so much to this country. Her multi-decade Parliamentary career, during which she held key ministerial positions means she permanently altered the course of history in this country. Her legacy is to be one of the most formidable and courageous voices in the upholding of law and order, and to be widely considered a national treasure. The last lunch we had ended with her enthusiastically saying she would write up some of her advice on sentencing reform, based on her vast experience. I am so sad I shall never get to read it, nor enjoy such a lunch again. Rest in Peace Ann.

This is nihilistic idiocy. We saw this week what happens when you don't have policy, with poor Laila Cunningham looking like a complete moron, having to bluff on live TV over her party's complete absence of a defence policy. Moreover, policy is multi-functional. It provides and intellectual foundation for all your subsequent comms and campaigns while contributing towards a reputation for seriousness and expertise. It is not for the consumption of the masses. It is your blueprint so that you know what to do with power when you get it. If you don't have a plan for power, there is no point in obtaining power. And supposing I'm completely wrong, there is nothing at all lost by producing it, especially when so much can be accomplished in a short time with the proper motivation.

Yeah policies are going to win it Once you ignore the fact that less than 1% of people have ever read a policy document it makes perfect sense Living in the online sphere it’s tempting to think huge amounts of people are politically engaged. They aren’t. Even members of political parties, even those that know the minutiae of how political campaigns work often have little idea of how pulling levers of government affect the world They don’t see the step by step policy decisions that got us here. They wake up every day and history resets, the status quo is how it’s always been

@MichaelLCrick I love you Michael, but you have this one wrong. Whatever she was like in her private life her campaign against homosexuality alone should condemn her to infamy. I'm sure some of the most horrific people through history have somebody to say something nice.

A former BBC colleague says: "Of the hundreds of high profile politicians I dealt with as a floor manager Ann stood out as one who was unfailingly sweet and personable. In those high pressure moments of appearing on Newsnight to be interviewed by Jeremy, it was unremarkable if MPs were terse or barely noticed you were there, but she was a pleasure to bring into the studio, lovely to deal with. What absolute horror."

It is quite something for the same division of the same university - @ucl's Bartlett Faculty of the Built Environment - to produce two of the most ludicrous policy reports in memory on the same day (1/?)

A Tribute: Ann Widdecombe was a happy warrior for the causes she believed in. Convert, Tory rebel, Brexiteer, unafraid of being called divisive because she knew exactly where she stood. Also, by every account, warm and generous to the people around her, whatever their politics. Rest in peace, Ann. conservativewoman.co.uk/ann-widdecombe…
