It’s common knowledge that a sharp knife is not only the most effective, but also the safest.
That’s the case with many tools:
Axes
Saws
Shears
Chisels
Drill bits
Bolt cutters
Mower blades
And the list goes on...
But, these tools can be dangerous and ineffective when they’re dull.
The same holds true for people.
As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another. Proverbs 27:17 NIV
I see this in my own life - when I’m not surrounding myself with folks building me up, holding me accountable, and mentoring me, I’m dull and ineffective.
Furthermore, there’s different ways for me to be sharpened.
→ Sometimes I need an angle grinder to significantly shape who I’ll become.
→ Sometimes I need a whetstone, slowly honing my edge with many, repeated passes.
Regardless, I can't sharpen myself.
Walk with the wise and become wise, for a companion of fools suffers harm. Proverbs 13:20 NIV
The lone ranger mentality doesn’t work for me.
I don’t want to be ineffective and dangerous.
I need fellowship with other like-minded people who want to lift each other up and carry each other’s burdens.
When that happens, I become the sharp knife, safely and swiftly being used for my purpose.
I’d encourage everyone to find a few people who will sharpen you… and, in turn, take the time to sharpen someone else.
