I would like to sincerely thank everyone who sent their congratulations and messages of encouragement. Your support is a strong source of motivation as I take on the new responsibilities ahead at the Ministry of Health of Puntland. The responsibility I am assuming is significant and requires focus, integrity, and dedicated service. I am fully prepared to carry out these duties with commitment, guided by the public interest and the goal of advancing our society. I also extend my sincere appreciation to the leadership of Puntland for the trust they have placed in me. This confidence is deeply valued, and I will work diligently to live up to it. During my tenure as Minister of Environment, we focused on strengthening and developing the Ministry, elevating its role at both national and international levels, and advancing efforts in environmental protection, climate change, and public awareness. We were able to position the Ministry as a key institution in policy, environmental safeguards, and sustainable development. I hope the incoming Minister will continue building on this progress, particularly in safeguarding the Ministry’s mandate and authority, and in strengthening public awareness to protect the environment and natural resources.#Somalia #Puntland

Yesterday, I chaired a meeting organized by the Ministry of Environment, Range and Climate Change of Puntland, which focused on the Puntland Climate Outlook Forum, addressing seasonal climate forecasts and their impacts. This forum, held twice a year, serves as an important platform linking scientific data, decision-making, and evidence-based planning to respond to climate change challenges. The meeting was attended by the Minister of Planning of Puntland, the Minister of Agriculture of Puntland, representatives from line ministries, and representatives from partner institutions working closely with the Ministry of Environment. Its key importance includes: •Providing early warning information to help prevent risks such as droughts and floods •Supporting government planning, particularly in agriculture, water, and environmental management •Reducing losses caused by natural disasters •Strengthening coordination among various institutions The forum plays a vital role in protecting lives, livestock, and natural resources while enhancing preparedness and resilience across Puntland. #somalia #climatechange

Lafta Gareen’s fallout is a clear reflection of failed political policies driven by Villa Somalia, whose continued grip on power has contributed to delaying Somalia’s progress in overcoming its political challenges and advancing state-building. For over 30 years, Somalia has been held back by unproductive, self-serving politics that have failed to reflect the true interests and aspirations of its people. #somalia

I, President of Southwest State H.E. Abdiaziz Laftagareen, resign as Deputy Chairman of the JSP effective today, March 18, 2026. I cannot support unconstitutional actions that weaken our unity. My commitment remains to Somalia’s unity, democracy, and the rule of law.

Today in Garowe, I participated in the official launch of Puntland’s 4th Development Plan (2026–2030), alongside the Deputy Minister of Environment. The conference was formally opened by H.E. Vice President Ilyas Osman Lugatoor and outlined Puntland’s five-year development vision under the theme: “Towards Inclusive Governance and a Self-Reliant, Prosperous Puntland.” This plan marks an important milestone: for the first time, climate change and environmental protection have been elevated from a cross-cutting issue to a dedicated development pillar for the next five years—reflecting our commitment to sustainable growth and resilience. The plan is built on five key pillars: inclusive governance and good leadership; justice, security reform and rule of law; economic development; social development; and environmental protection and climate action. The event brought together international partners, government institutions, the private sector, scholars, diaspora, youth, and women to support Puntland’s shared development path. #Somalia @EU_in_Somalia @WorldBank #

I spoke about the recent remarks made regarding Somalis living in the United States and how such statements can harm the reputation of hundreds of thousands of Somalis both inside and outside the country. I highlighted the role the United States has played in supporting Somalia, and how our community today continues to contribute to the country in which they live. I also emphasized the importance of ensuring that public discussions and policies are guided by fairness and mutual respect. #Somalia #Trump #IlhanOmar @US2SOMALIA @StateDept #Minnesota

Today marks World Wildlife Conservation Day, a day dedicated to protecting the natural heritage that sustains our communities and defines our ecosystems. Since the collapse of the Somali state—and even in the years before it—Somalia’s wildlife has suffered significant decline. Several species unique to Somalia and the Horn of Africa have rapidly diminished; some are now locally extinct, while others have moved to neighbouring countries in search of safer habitats. Years of conflict, uncontrolled hunting, and weak institutional capacity have deepened ecological imbalance and threatened our biodiversity. In the decades after state collapse, many international projects implemented in Somalia did not place sufficient emphasis on wildlife protection. This gap contributed to rising environmental risks and slowed the development of strong conservation policies, community awareness, and sustainable management of our natural assets. Puntland holds a unique position in Somalia, covering nearly one-third of the country’s landmass. This vast territory—rich in rangelands, coastal ecosystems, mountains, and rare species—requires urgent and coordinated protection efforts to preserve what remains and revive what has been lost. As the Ministry of Environment, Range and Climate Change of Puntland, we prioritise the defence and restoration of wildlife, the elimination of illegal hunting, and the adoption of modern conservation technologies that enhance surveillance, habitat monitoring, and community-led protection models. I urge all Puntland communities—pastoralists, youth, elders, civil society, district administrations, and partners—to take an active role in protecting and caring for our wildlife. Let us unite to protect Puntland’s wildlife, strengthen our ecosystems, and ensure a resilient future for all across #Somalia. #WorldWildlifeConservationDay #Biodiversity #WildlifeProtection #EnvironmentalConservation #ClimateResilience #ProtectOurWildlife #SustainableFuture #MoERCC

It is deeply concerning that the President of Somalia suggests that Al-Shabaab should be allowed to obtain national ID cards — a desperate step aimed at forcing through a disputed electoral process and legitimizing the NIRA rollout. The very purpose of a national ID system is to protect state-building from extremist infiltration. What greater risk exists than allowing the highest office in the country to open the door for a terrorist group to obtain identification simply to secure an election outcome that Villa Somalia wants to retain power? #Somalia #Governance #Security #Federalism #RuleOfLaw

Today we held an important meeting at the Puntland State House, chaired by Acting President & VP H.E. Ilyas Osman Lugatoor, to address the escalating threat of sand-dune encroachment along our coastal belt. The Ministry of Environment presented new findings showing severe impacts in Jiriiban, Godobjiraan & Garacad — sand dunes burying grazing lands, cutting off roads and transport routes, surrounding homes, damaging community infrastructure, and endangering livelihoods across entire villages. Puntland’s coastline, which forms part of Somalia’s 1,600 km coast, faces increasing risk — and the people living in these areas stand to lose their livelihoods if action is not taken. A joint committee bringing together Government, Parliament, the Garacad Port Committee & local community leaders will now spearhead coordinated, long-term action to protect our coastal communities. The Puntland Ministry of Environment will lead the technical response and coordination. “Protecting the environment is protecting our people — today’s action shapes tomorrow’s survival.” 🌿 #Somalia #ClimateAction #Cop30 #WorldBank #Puntland

Nearly half of Somalia’s 3,300 km coastline — about 1,600 km — falls under Puntland State, where coastal communities depend on the sea and the land for their survival. Today, they stand on the frontline, defending both from advancing sand dunes, encroachment, erosion, and neglect. #COP30 #BelemBrazil #somalia #garowe

Today, I had the honor of presenting a comprehensive report on the sand dune challenges affecting communities across parts of Puntland’s coastal areas, particularly Jariiban district. I extend my appreciation to the team at the Puntland Ministry of Environment and all community members who contributed to this important assessment. I hope that together, we will stand united in addressing this environmental threat and safeguarding Puntland’s natural heritage. #Puntland #ClimateAction #Environment #SandDunes #Jariiban #COP30 #Somalia
