Equal Pay Is a Fundamental Right, Not a Favour. J&K interns being paid less than their equally positioned counterparts directly violates the Supreme Court’s landmark ruling of October 26, 2016, where Justices Khehar and Bobde held that equal pay for equal work is an unambiguous legal right, applicable to both regular and temporary employees alike. Denying this right is, in the Court’s own words, exploitative enslavement. India’s ratification of the ICESCR on April 10, 1979 further obligates the State to ensure just wages for all workers. This is not a demand. It is the law.

If raising genuine concerns about exploitative intern stipends is now being treated as a “violation,” then GMC Anantnag seriously needs to understand the difference between discipline and dictatorship. Forcing students to delete videos and harassing them for speaking about their rights is shameful. Freedom of speech is a fundamental right, not a privilege granted by authorities when it suits them. Medical interns work day and night in hospitals yet when they raise their voice peacefully about injustice, they are targeted instead of being heard. MBBS interns in other states of India receive stipends reaching ₹30k+ while in J&K are still being paid only ₹12k despite carrying the same clinical duties and workload. Medical interns are the backbone of hospital and such a huge disparity in stipend is deeply unfair.#JK
