I had dinner once with a top physicist and a top computer scientist and asked what they thought the probability was that we were in a simulation.

The next decision will most likely involve a hike in rates given the escalation phase of the Middle East War and the associated economic effects of the attacks on energy infrastructure.

The economy didn't grow at all in January. "Monthly GDP showed no growth. Services showed no growth, production fell by 0.1%, and construction grew by 0.2% in January 2026," reported the ONS today One of the few areas of growth in the stats was car repairs - caused by potholes. Brent crude closed the week at $103 a barrel, with WTI at $99.
This comes amid mounting evidence in the US and elsewhere that the higher oil prices caused by the (now two-week-old) Middle East War are already being passed through to the pump in a significant way.
The adverse impact on affordability is already being compounded by higher mortgage rates( now above 6%).
A broader hit to the cost of living is more likely by the day.
