From the dust jacket of "Approach to Penance," by Dom Hubert Van Zeller, OSB When asked if he'd like bookstores to host autographing parties, he replied: "God forbid." 🤣

@frjoshTX That is great, thanks for sharing 🙏 And clearly, when a priest fails to feed both, either his knowledge of truth through study and prayer, or his personality through pastoral immersion, his words become doctrine without heart or mere sentiment without meaning.

One should hope this counsel would not need to be given. If I learned a deacon or parochial vicar had AI write his homily, he wouldn’t preach again for a long time. What’s wrong with it is that, to quote Phillips Brooks, preaching is the presentation of truth through personality.

In a private exchange with priests of the Diocese of Rome on Thursday, Pope Leo XIV responded to four questions, advising them on prayer, study, and priestly fraternity. catholicnewsagency.com/news/269953/po…

This is the first Ash Wednesday since Around the Horn aired its final show. Feeling a little nostalgic for @TonyReali and his faithful ashes on air each year. A small but steady witness of faith in sports media 🙏

A weird one: People are flocking to this church in Rome after a recent restoration left one of the frescoed angels looking remarkably like Italy's Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. Full story coming to ACI Prensa and @cnalive

@aciprensa

Jacques Fesch, after murdering a policeman during a botched robbery attempt, spent years on death row where he underwent a profound conversion to Christ. Once an atheist, he embraced prayer, the sacraments, and mystical union with God, even calling his prison cell a "monastery." On the morning of his guillotine execution in Paris at age 27, he kissed the crucifix fervently and asked for it again as his last request. In his final journal entry hours before death, he wrote: “In five hours, I will see Jesus.” As the blade fell, he entrusted himself to the Blessed Virgin and the mercy of the Lord.

Not even this bitter cold gets in the way of this beautiful work of mercy. The Church still gathers to bury the dead with dignity and pray for their souls!

A paradigmatic sin of our age is hardness of heart. In today's Gospel, Jesus looks at the Pharisees 'with anger, grieved at their hardness of heart' before healing the man. Our spiritual pride creates self-imposed obstacles to His grace and love. Lord, soften our hearts!

@AndyHermanNFL And the fruit of perspective. Post that poll as the clock hits zero and I think we see something different. Glad to see that the waves have calmed a bit.

@SaraPerla8 I know, good point. I guess my point is that seminary, as it currently exists, seems like strange preparation for parish life, at least from the perspective of communal life.

"Seminary life is community life. Most priests today live alone. Even when two or more live together, they do not eat together or pray together. The average rectory today is a hotel with a cross on top." The disparity b/t sem and parish from a communal life POV is astounding
Catholic World Report@cworldreport

Here are several issues that contribute to the current problem, from the perspective of having served as a seminary professor, a vocations director, and currently as a mentor for many seminarians and young priests, writes Fr. Peter M.J. Stravinskas.catholicworldreport.com/2026/01/08/opi…

Very excited that my sister's order, the Handmaids of the Heart of Jesus, will be establishing a house in the Archdiocese of Milwaukee. They have purchased the former convent of the Dominican Sisters of the Perpetual Rosary and plan to send sisters by Fall 2027! Praise God!

Happy Feast to St. John the Apostle! I love this story about his later years; just sitting in church, reminding the people over and over of what the Lord had so often told him, "Little children, love one another."
