Oh no!!!! There is no relationship a young sports fan has like the one they have with their local announcer. And for me, the people whose voice I’ve heard the most in my life: my mom, my dad and John Sterling. Even if that’s an exaggeration- gotta be 5000 three hour games- it’s not by much. Mellifluous, bombastic, wonderfully gas baggy: everything you want in your home team baseball announcer. Myit is high, myit is far, myit was perfect, John.

He didn’t just call games, he was the game, the reason you came to enjoy just as much as the ball. He was in it and just a much a part of it to his loyal listeners, as the ball game. And likely in his own mind, too, haha. He also had a way of playing games with his delivery and call. It’s a magic trick to imbue yourself into your calls; it shouldn’t work, often it doesn’t work, but for John in so many fans minds it worked! The way I knew all his inside jokes- he’d be singing show tunes in the middle of calls or trying to speak Italian in a home run call- I loved all of it. Opposing fans loathed it all, I’m sure, and that’s its own beautiful thing.
