My uncle died. The funeral was yesterday.
He was extraordinary.
He was born in Punjab, India. His father, and grand father both military men.
He went to University to study Economics & Politics and developed a love for folk music. He had a remarkable gift for singing.
Whilst a student, he entered the college Singer of the Year competition. He won it in year 1, year 2 and year 3.
He married my dad’s sister, Surjit Kaur Rajasansi, in 1965 and they moved to the UK.
He was part of the Commonwealth migration of people invited to the UK to help rebuild its post war economy, and rebuild it, they did.
They worked, started a family, two sons. He did not abandon his love for music.
He sang at family gatherings. He had an incredible voice. To paraphrase Morecombe and Wise, all the right notes in all the right places.
He was part of a Bhangra dance group, The Diwana’s who performed up and down the country sharing the culture of Punjab, India.
I was born in 1972, my dad went to the recording studio where uncle was making a record. The story I was told; they were struggling with the final track. My dad walked in, holding up bottles of whiskey and shared the good news. The group put down their instruments and had a celebration. Two hours later, the song was done.
My dad ordered 200 copies in an effort to break the song into the top 40, only my dad would try and do that…!
It didn’t quite do the trick, and the song was up against Don Mclean’s ‘American Pie’ and Michael Jackson’s ‘Got to be there.’ Paul McCartney with Wings only peaked that week at number 16.
I saw a lot of him over the next half century, it was when extended families had more time to share with one another, without the pressures of business and work. It was a different time.
I was looking at photographs of my uncle last night, happy memories I will always cherish, not only time we spent together and the images captured but the music he recorded giving our family an eternal flame of this beautiful, talented, intelligent and loved man.
I kept a copy of the vinyl record he recorded in 1972 safely on my bookshelf. A couple of years ago, I gave it to my uncle’s grandsons as a family memento they may one day share with their children and grandchildren.
My uncle’s grandson, Taran, gave a eulogy at the funeral that made us all very proud, it would have made his grandfather smile. The wider world never got to hear him sing but I’m going to share that song he recorded in March 1972. It was played at the funeral.
Raghbir Singh Sunner came into our family when he married my dad’s sister, he left it so much greater.
