@toothsleuth33 On average ~10% gap in the lower ranges, so 50% VO2max is typically ~=60% max HR. These gaps narrow as we get closer to (and beyond) the second threshold.

This is important. He's almost entirely wrong, but not quite. Cortisol release is intensity-dependent. While work >~60% VO2max increases cortisol, work <50-60% VO2max decreases cortisol below baseline levels. That is, it's a de-stressor that stabilizes your metabolism. In other words, the metabolic health of the athlete has a lot to do with how they train & how much of it is at moderate-high intensities.

Endurance athletes are building the very disease they think they're outrunning. Distance runners and cyclists accumulate visceral fat, heart fat, and muscle fat while believing their exercise protects them. Their cortisol remains too high for too long and contributes to all sorts of dysfunction.

@IIHFHockey @usahockey 3 on 3 is an abomination. Don't ever do it again. No other sport settles their most important games with gimmicks like that.

@acoyne Crow did the same thing again, waiting on the line for the next car, which ran over the chestnut, cracking it open. Crow flew down and started eating the insides. 2/2

Then it flew up into a tree and started making a sound I’ve never heard a crow make before. It’s difficult to describe, but it sounded almost like a gong. A gong of … triumph? Has anyone had this happen to them? Seen it? Heard of it? That crow was basically playing with Toby 5/5

So I took our dog Toby to the park today, where he started chasing a large, ungainly-looking crow. The crow flew low to the ground for some time, as if it were struggling to gain altitude, but after a chase of about two hundred yards, escaped up into the trees. 1/n

@acoyne Once when walking to work on our residential street I saw a crow pick up a fallen chestnut in its beak and fly up to perch on a power line spanning the road. It waited for a car to approach, then dropped the chestnut in front of it. Car drove by. 1/2

@acoyne Wd indicate accepting Speakership was for partisan reasons in first place. Same principle as Speaker breaking ties by voting with govt.

@acoyne On what principle would just-elected Speaker resign? Wouldn't resignation itself be for purely partisan reasons, thus tarnishing the post?
