Abiy Ahmed has turned Ethiopia from a pillar of regional stability into a source of ongoing conflict, humanitarian crisis, and political fragmentation across East Africa. His rule has been defined by war—from the devastating Tigray conflict (2020–2022) to expanding violence in Amhara and Oromia—where political disputes are increasingly resolved through force rather than dialogue. The Pretoria Agreement was meant to end the Tigray war, yet key provisions remain unfulfilled, including the continued presence of foreign and non-federal forces, lack of accountability, and persistent civilian suffering. The involvement of Eritrean forces in the war internationalized the conflict, and rising tensions today risk triggering another cross-border confrontation, threatening the fragile stability of the Horn of Africa. At the same time, divide-and-rule politics have deepened ethnic and religious tensions, accelerating national fragmentation. Repeated patterns of denial and misinformation—particularly regarding the role of external forces in the war—have eroded both domestic and international trust. The human toll remains catastrophic: hundreds of thousands killed, millions displaced, and widespread hunger driven by restricted humanitarian access. Economic decline has followed, with inflation, instability, and declining investor confidence worsening the crisis. This is no longer contained within Ethiopia. The consequences are spreading across borders, posing a serious threat to regional peace and security.
