The Atlanta Police Department says it will “enhance” its “citywide public safety and security posture” ahead of England’s World Cup semi-final against Argentina on Wednesday. There is a long-standing historical tension between the two countries, stemming from the 1982 Falklands War, and videos have already circulated online of England and Argentina supporters clashing in Miami — where England played its World Cup quarter-final against Norway — over the weekend. And for arguably the most high-risk match at the World Cup, the APD is stepping up its efforts to ensure it passes without issue. More from @Dan_Sheldon_ 🔗 nyti.ms/3RhFJJQ

Argentina have millions of fans a across the globe. Today, the national team is backed by bulletproof support back home. Argentina can also be universally despised. But no other team in the world embraces its polarization like Argentina. They feed off it.

Tuchel's double half-time substitution really didn't work and he spent the rest of the game making further changes to fix things. The crucial boost was the sheer energy of Rogers and Spence. Anderson's role changed three times! ⬇️ nytimes.com/athletic/74396…

The thing is... the legacy of this 48-team World Cup will not be about multiple cinderella stories. The construct of this tournament was built for the four best teams to be alive at the end.
The New York Times@nytimes

From @TheAthleticFC: Gianni Infantino has said FIFA will examine expanding the World Cup by a further 16 nations to a 64-team tournament ahead of its next edition in 2030. The 2030 tournament will be spread across six nations and three continents nyti.ms/3SVx4gY

The Breel Embolo incident isn’t about stamping out diving. It’s about punishing diving. Deception will always be part of the sport.

So, VAR steps in to give Embolo a second yellow because the referee made the wrong decision in the first place to book Paredes? If it was just a foul, not a yellow, it’s not reviewable. Pure insanity. Game’s gone. Less VAR man. For the love of god

Morgan Rogers’ shot had plenty of pace on it, some top spin too. But Ørjan Nyland has to do better there. He completely misjudged it. Huge error.

South Africa international Jayden Adams has died at the age of 25, the South African Football Players Union (SAFPU) has said. SAFPU – which is recognised by FIFPRO, the global union for professional soccer players — said it was “devastated by the untimely passing” of the midfielder, who appeared in three of his nation’s matches at this summer’s World Cup. Sources confirmed the news to The Athletic. @LeonImber and @Simon_Hughes__
