@prinsessmarthe @tommysantos14 You are making the claim that two companies fighting it out to make a sale to the same customer, trying to win revenue against each other — is not competing? Good luck with your logic and reasoning in your life.

@Fernand10799134 @tommysantos14 That is not what it means to "compete" in economics. What we mean by "compete" is the business model, not the consumers they serve. All you are doing is applying your ignorance to a complicated subject.

This isn’t hard to understand. The DOJ blocked the merger because it violated U.S. Antitrust laws. It went to trial, and the court ruled it did, in fact, violated the law and be harmful to the consumer. The alternative was to allow a merger that violated the law. So, of course MAGA is fine with that. Spirit went bankrupt because of shitty management. Period.

Biden’s DOJ literally sued to stop the merger

@prinsessmarthe @tommysantos14 @grok Instead of just making wild claims, how about you provide actual evidence of your claim from an UNBIASED source? Ie: not from an antitrust process that is ideology driven trying to justify a result they want?

I’ll let Grok answer you. All I know is that the last 5 flights I’ve taken have been chosen between a Jet Blue, United and Delta. Heck, on my flight next week Jet Blue was more expensive than Delta or the American airlines flight that I’m actually taking. So saying they do not compete is bull.

@nobrainflip Is it really that hard to buy a class C apartment building at a 7%-8% (say 7.5%) cap rate, borrow 75% of the purchase price at 6% interest rate and make a cash on cash yearly yield of 12%? Inflation adjusted yearly with rents rising while debt payments stay fixed…

If you’re under 30, I genuinely don’t know what the “safe” life path is anymore. Buy stocks? S&P is at ATHs. Buy gold? Near ATHs. Save cash? Dollar gets cooked. Buy a house? Housing market is cooked. Buy bonds? Barely beating inflation. At this point, crypto is one of the only not overpriced places left

Who is being paid $5000/month? It’s your money, taken against your will, earning barely inflation after it is hijacked for many decades that is MAYBE given back to you if you don’t die before 65. If you die, your grown children get jack of what you put in. There is a reason they do not let you opt OUT of social security — most would.

the max you can put into social security each year is $10,453.20. do that from 18 all the way to retirement and you’d max out around $4,873/month. if that same money went into an S&P 500 index fund instead, you’d be looking at about $32,583/month. yeah… something about social security just feels off.

@codetalkio There is a reason Denmark GDP has grown only 44-49% from 2000 to 2024 and USA has grown 60-70%… You think policies like this, killing new businesses, didn’t help create that growth gap?

Dumbass take, we have higher minimum wage in Denmark, comparable price for coffee, and manage just fine here If you cannot figure out how to run your business while paying a livable wage, then you should go back to business school again These takes are so self serving
Peter McCormack 🏴‍☠️🇬🇧🇮🇪@PeterMcCormack

A minimum wage of £15 would end my coffee shop, it would have to close, as would many other businesses. I’ll explain for the economically illiterate. Staff costs are currently half our costs, a £15 minimum wage is actually more than £15 an hour for the company, because you have to add: - 12.07% holiday - Sick pay - Maternity pay if and when required - National insurance - Pension contributions These costs would mean the shop loses money because remember, energy costs are up, rates are up, regulations are up. Now you can pass these costs onto the consumer - that would mean charging a lot more for coffee, people won’t pay it. The likes of Starbucks and Costa can, because they have economies of scale. The independent doesn’t. Now the little socialist will say well this is your fault, if you can’t run a business that can afford to pay its staff properly, but the little socialist has never run a business and does not understand the dynamics. Now I could pay some staff off and fill those hours myself or reduce us to one staff member during certain periods - but this proves the point that a minimum wage costs jobs. There was a time when these jobs were done by kids, perhaps on the weekend, paid a lower wage, no holiday and no silly employment rights. Perhaps they were even paid cash. The dynamic worked and small businesses like this could operate. It was also a great first job. Sadly now it isn’t worth employing entitlement youngsters at this level of pay. So alas, I don’t need the stress, the business would close, a number of jobs would be lost. Economics is about understanding these dynamics, no vibes. The cost of living is not solved through passing on inflation to the business, it is solved by ending high inflation and creating prosperity. This is what socialists don’t understand, they can’t create prosperity, they can only destroy it.

Of course, I don’t approve of this negativity toward men. It’s repulsive But the effect of having a gender skew toward female might be positive. Is there a reason to believe we wouldn’t all be happier with, say, 55% women and 45% men?
staysaasy@staysaasy

I hear people say this and it is so sad man. Smart people say stuff like “oh I’d never want a boy. I have to teach them to not be a violent predator.” This framing is fundamentally antagonistic to half the population and a huge problem in society.

@PotatoMcWhiskey We aren’t married, why should one person subsidize the other to live in a place they cannot afford? Let them rent a place that the lesser-income person can afford to pay 50% on. Invest the savings. If you get married, she benefits from the savings and can use for a wedding budget

@Chaelor I'm happy to pay for utilities and groceries but I am NOT paying for your mortgage if my name isn't on it. Besides, if I was paying the mortgage or property tax its a risk for the other party because I could claim part ownership with those receipts

@PotatoMcWhiskey @MGTOW_Mot Not at all, i’d just sign a lease document with my girlfriend stipulating the terms of her co-habitation in the house. All legal, she has no claim on my house and if we break up we simply terminate the lease. Not that hard.

@MGTOW_Mot Yes thats literally the point. If I'm not married to you but I'm paying your mortgage you have just given me potential a 50/50 claim that I can exploit in a messy breakup on your house

Yawn, my mother as an educator in NYC her whole life making less than 150k now (and much less previously) lived within her means and is a multimillionaire multiple times over heading into retirement now. Has done 1-2 trips every year too. That’s as a single person for last 26 years too and started saving at age 40 as an immigrant and mother raising a son alone. People do just fine on 150k salary in NYC if they don’t splurge.

If you make $150k a year in a major US city, you are effectively Lower Middle Class. Stop acting like you’re rich because you can afford an overpriced latte and a lease. You’re one missed paycheck away from total collapse.

@ward7909 @EricLDaugh Better than 5 companies bidding, one lowballs it to win and then goes 10x over budget. Fixed cost guarantees a price at the time government is awarding contracts and adds teeth to bids.

@EricLDaugh That won’t work for cutting edge defense contracts. The contractors would have to look at past contracts add 50% to their most overrun contract and apply that to the expected cost of contract. 🤦‍♂️

🚨 WOW! President Trump just signed a DOGE EXECUTIVE ORDER — establishing a fixed-price contract as the default in nearly all federal contracts, saving funds "It will drive down FRAUD and ABUSE in contracting government-wide." TRUMP: "Would anybody like to object?" 🤣 Keep DOGEing, our republic needs it!

Maybe if we took the 25-50k rent controlled and VACANT nyc apartments that landlords cannot afford to renovate (due to rent being so low), we‘d have more supply and median costs would come down…I have a friend living in a SOHO rent controlled apartment payin $800/month while he earns 500k+ yearly in finance. Make it make sense!

@Fernand10799134 @JeremiahDJohns Exactly. The bottom half is wildly subsidized so the genuine middle class can’t afford to live here. We could build our way out of it but never will either. It’s a genuine tragedy.

you do not need 150K for a single person to live comfortably in NYC the reason you believe this is that you have political psychosis and have no idea what the state of reality is. Median *household* income in nyc is 80K.
db@dbessner

I truly do not understand this point of view. Study after study says you need at least 150k *for a single person* to live comfortably in NYC. why fetishize shitty pay? so many leftists are Calvinists at heart

The median 5-borough salary of 81k clearly cannot afford the median 1 bedroom 4k/month rent. Perhaps a studio at $3300 works? Or get a 3 bedroom with two roommates for a median $5300 — $1766/person… There is no “right” to a 1 bedroom for a single median salary person unfortunately..

Median 1 bedroom for 4k/month? What are you doing, trying to live in a fancy manhattan neighborhood? Go get a harlem 1 bedroom for under $2000/month. Bronx 1 bedroom under $2000/month that is a 30 minute subway ride to midtown manhattan (door to door). Plenty of options out there.

@JeremiahDJohns Huge #s of New Yorkers make sub $50k individually and the city subsidizes them wildly. NYCHA residents pay an average of $600 a month rent with huge subsidies for everything else. Make $80k as an individual and your median take home is $4800 a month, median 1br is $4k a month.

@CannaVestments @Trulieve If you are a MSO, in a adult use state, don’t you just pay (and help) a customer get a medical card and offer them medical product at a slight discount to cause them to switch?

Arguably @Trulieve is the largest immediate beneficiary of this initial ruling, given their outsized exposure to state-medical sales in Florida relative to their overall business (whereas peers have far more adult-use exposure) and the potential reduction in their UTP
